Churn Thoughts

The move indicates that Verizon Online is suffering from a lot of churn -- people leaving soon after they join as they are unhappy for one reason or another -- so they are trying to discourage that.

Also, it is likely the people leaving are also disconnecting their land lines and opting for a VoIP solution with their new ISP (or separate provider) or go wirelessly for voice.

Then, to setup a DSL line is likely more costly (line quality, interference, distance, and more nightmares) than a cable modem (plug, authenticate once, play).

Last, at $37.95 DSL is still cheaper than cable modem and sufficient for most web browsing and email, so Verizon can get away with it. This is unfortunate as it indicates lack of competitiveness among the broadband ISPs. So what's new?!

37.95 may be cheaper than some cable companies (Not mine, 36.95 for true unlimited 5/256). But, then you tack on all of their sneaky fees and you suddenly have a price that is 10 dollars more a month than your quoted price. That's 120 more bucks a year and that's just for 1.5/384. If you want anything faster, it's 47.95 plus about 12 dollars in additional fees. So, your bill is close to 60 bucks a month. Verizon wouldn't be so bad if they didn't tack on all those ridiculous fees. Such as the one for "Providing Data Over Phone Lines".... I dropped verizon mostly because of their recent price hike and hidden fees.

I see people here make a comment about their newsgroups as a justification for the price, they used to be fantastic, but anymore they are just as bad as any other ISP based Usenet. The retention, speed and overall quality of Verizon's newsgroups has gone downhill ever since they introduced the 3 meg tier. They say they know about it and are working on the problem... But that's been over 6 months.
