anon : Here is an answer. I've been struggling with Intel2200s and 2915s for too long with direct support from the manufacturers. Use these steps:

1) Download the newest drivers and use Windows to manage the cards. Don't use Intel Pro set.

2) Uncheck the defaults in the driver settings and manually set what you need. If the default setting is what you want, uncheck the default box, change the setting then change the setting back to what you want.

3) Make sure you set transmit power to high !!

4) set the roaming aggressiveness to be appropriate to your environment. If you have only 1 AP and/or the client does not move much set it to low. If your device is mobile and you have many APs set it to high.

5) Make sure the network settings are set so that you do not scan for better networks and connect to them. Having this enabled causes 2 problems, the card wastes too many resource scanning other networks for no reason and the card may try to connect to these networks even though you do not want it to.

6) If you have a mixed mode environment B/G manually set everything to B or G. Contrary to popular belief in a network with both B and G clients, clients will perform better if they are all hard set to B than if you have a mix of B and G clients associated to the AP. This is a problem with almost every AP. The AP switching back and forth between B and G modes slows everything down dramatically. Even if you connection says 54Mbps.

7) Realize the Intel chips are there for the a reason. That reason is they are cheap and the PC manufacturer can keep their costs down by using them. Switch to a better chip if you can. I have never seen any chip out perform Cisco's chip. Personally I use the Atheros whenever I can.

marshall_lai : For all of us who are having various disconnect issues with laptops using the 2200BG chipsets, I wonder what the AP equipment is.....

Reason that I am asking is based on my experience. I have the Sony TX17GP which uses the Intel 2200BG. Now at home, I am using a Linksys WRT54GXv2 as an AP (FW 2.0.08). With that AP, I have numerous problems with the TX17GP of it dropping connections, not able to associate when WPA/WPA2 TKIP is selected (AES works fine however), the WPA2 mixed mode doesn't allow TKIP devices to associate...... etc

Now, the same network setup and replacing the WRT54GXv2 (everything same), then everything works. No dropping of the connection from the 2200BG clients and always able to associate within seconds by clients with both WPA2/AES and WPA/TKIP simultaneously, which I was not able to achieve with the WRT54GXv2. All this with the WRT54GC (which I believe using a different chipset internally).

So I really believe the problem lies in compatibility between the 2200BG and certain wireless chipsets being used in different AP.

So let me start:

2200BG (on Sony TX17GP). Connection drop and unable to associate with WRT54GXv2 (this happens with TKIP encryptions). WRT54GXv2 fw 2.0.08. Intel Wireless driver 9.0.4 (WZC)

2200BG (on Sony TX17GP).
anon : I had an interesting problem.. wonder who else has come across it with the same hardware..
i've got bunch of Dell Latitude D510 laptops here with Intel 2200BG cards in them, and we're running LEAP over WEP atm with Cisco 1200 series AP's. For a long time we've struggled with pre-logon authentication, and it just hasn't worked. I followed some advice from speedie & managed to get it working, then realised that there was a later version of the software (10.x). I upgraded to this, and one of the options in the package-maker (admin side of ProSet) had an option for CISCO APs. I enabled this (it's a cisco wap!) but it magically stopped the pre-logon from working.. so i ended up turning it off, and voila, pre-logon works. What's the point of putting in something that supports cisco access points that doesn't work? hmm.

anon : I'm facing another problem with my 2200bg:

I have a 128k wireless internet connection at home (you think that's crap? I've been on dial-up till recently :)). Now, my donwload speed should be 13-14KB/s, but, most of the time it's around 9-10KB/s. The connection to the AP varries from 54Mbps when the card establishes the connection to 1Mbps after a few minutes. Signal strength is "Good" or "Very Good" most of the times. Now, PROSet shows the signal strength of -70, -69db, while my ISP's website shows my current signal as weak as -90, -91db (even -93db this morning). The thing is, the company is run by 2 guys, (I live in a small town), so last night I called one of them to complain. The guy tells me the problem is the weak signal. The minute I finished the conversation, my speed went up to 13KB/s. Unfortuantely, this morning, it went back to the way it was before, 9-10KB/s. Believe it or not, this is the second time the same exact series of events happens: I call them, they say "we'll see what we can do, but you're signal's really weak", I finish the conversation and then the speed magically goes up, but only for the night! Now, I know these guys pay for their users' traffic, and I'm donwloading stuff pretty much all the time (my pc's on 24/7). Could it be that they're actually cutting down my speed, so they would pay less? I mean, right now, I'm really pissed off and the only thing that's keeping me from suing them is the signal strength info I'm getting from their website.
Can Intel's PROSet signal info be trusted? And can the signal strength really affect my 2200bg's speed (I've seen it work at 220KB/s last night, while the ISP guy was "testing" something).
Btw, I have the newest Intel's drivers.
Thanks in advance.

anon : I know this is a long post, but I believe it contains valuable info and will save many of you a lot of time and headache.

I am a net admin running 20 or so Dell notebooks on my wireless network (3 Linksys WAP54G access points) all laptops are using the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG cards and all are having the same issue with speeds dropping from 54Mbps all the way down to 1Mbps before very s-l-o-w-l-y climbing back to 54Mbps (takes a day sometimes) unless the wireless connection is disabled then re-enabled, that seems to bring the speed back to 54Mbps for a short while before dropping back down.

I am 100% confident the problem is with the 2200BG cards or with their associated drivers. I ran the following simple test to prove that:

2 Dell laptops side by side, same exact distance from AP (Linksys WAP54G), one of them has a built in Intel 2200BG card and the other one has a Linksys Wireless G USB adapter. I noticed that when the laptop with the 2200BG card starts to drop speed, the laptop with the linksys card remains at 54Mbps. The 2200BG keeps dropping speed eventually reaching 1Mbps while the Linksys card remains constantly at 54Mbps.

I tried upgrading the drivers for the 2200BG from Intel.com but no luck. I tried to download updated drivers from dell.com but the link was dead so I finally placed a support call to Dell and told them what's been happening and that I have found tons of posts on the internet about this very issue. Dell's response was, to no surprise, that they have not heard about this problem! Upgrade AP firmware to Linksys's latest version
2. Upgrading the drivers on the machines
3. Moving one of the APs closer to the laptops
4. I have an Acer TravelMate 4601WMLi with Intel 2200BG... out of the box, with driver v. 9.0.1.?? (can't remember what the last digit was), I had the regular disconnect/reconnect every couple of minutes. I updated to the latest 9.0.3.9 driver and this cured the problem, but I now have (or perhaps "still" have) the wandering connection speed. It starts off at 54Mbps then quickly drops to between 18 and 36Mbps, with Good-to-Very-Good signal strength. Usually it stays stable at around 24Mbps.

I'm running a Belkin F5D7632-4A wireless router modem, which I'll admit isn't the best piece of kit - but my wife and son have have no problems connecting their laptops to it, and they consistently maintain 54Mbps connections. My wife uses an external Belkin adaptor, and my son's Toshiba laptop runs Toshiba's own adaptor (not sure of the chipset).

I've sent an e-mail to Acer support and will await their response, but my guess is I'll have to find a replacement wi-fi adaptor.

Does anyone know if the 2200BG in my machine will be a mini PCI card or an integrated on-board solution? Acer's website claims "integrated Intel 2200BG", but I wonder if this is just part of the Intel "Centrino" marketing hype?? If it *is* a mini-PCI card, that's good news as my machine has an easy access bay for the memory and mini PCI slots.

Also... there's a hardware wi-fi enable / disable button on my machine. If I install a different wi-fi card, will that button still be supported? It's more convenient than the software switching...

Thanks in advance...

Mike

Conflicting messages about whether or not the radio is "on" and "off" depend upon how you access the info (Access Connections, Device Mgr, etc). Both of us experienced problems after making required updates to bios, operating system, Access Connections, ThinkPad config package, and updated drivers for the wireless card. In my case IBM/Lenovo tech support made me do it to try to fix a different connection problem (failure to access an external hardrive). For 4 months, my wireless card couldn't connect to any network (though it could "see" them). I finally resolved it by rejecting Access Connections and reverting to Windows connection after first going through all config menus and resetting or re-entering appropriate settings.
banditws6 : Same probs here. Intel 2200BG in a Dell Inspiron 8600. I was using a Linksys WRT54G (v2) router and recently bought a D-Link DI-624. I've had the same issues with both routers so I figure it is the laptop or, more specifically after reading this thread, the wireless NIC.

When I first got the machine, I found it was bluescreening constantly if I used WPA security on my router. In fact, 64-bit WEP is the only security setting I could use that resulted in flawless operation of the laptop's wireless connection. I spent hours on the phone with one of Dell's India-based techs to arrive at the conclusion that, yes, the drivers for the 2200BG are garbage. Since I could get it working at low-strength security, Dell wouldn't do anything else about it.

To this day, I still have the same problem with stronger wireless security models. If I try to use higer security, such as WPA PSK-TKIP, my laptop won't correctly pull an IP from the DHCP server. Router logs show that the correct IP was doled out, but the laptop will use a 169.xx fallback address and claim "Limited or no connectivity." But if I set up the IP address, gateway and DNS servers manually, it works fine!

...Except that it drops the wireless connection several times a day. It promptly reconnects, claims everything is fine with 100% signal strength, but I can't get anywhere. Can't hit websites, can't ping other machines on the LAN, nothing. If I "repair" the wireless network connection, suddenly it starts working again. When this happens, myriad TCP/IP related errors appear in the system log, but nothing that's helped me track down a fix.

Thinking about reinstalling WinXP from scratch and trying the latest 2200BG drivers. Intel suggested I get OEM-specific network drivers from my laptop manufacturer (Dell), but when I downloaded the latest drivers from Dell's site, they would not install -- some kind of error related to SMBIOS if I recall correctly. I did a manual driver update via Device Manager, but who knows if it worked correctly.

Frustrating crap.
--
"I'll follow the law until it's just stupid." -Ted Nugent

jpark : I got rid of my Intel (2915abg) card for connection issues which can not be resolved. With a good signal, connection speed will drop. When connection speed drops to 1mbps, the connection is effectively dropped. Reconnection re-establishes the connection speed (for a time). Connection speed with these cards varies wildly for no apparent reason. The transmit signal strength is another issue. By default, (not the default setting) the card uses about 40% of the available power. You can change that but it doesn't stay changed. If you are using the Intel utility to manage the card, it will lie -- showing 'excellent quality' when in fact the connection is very poor and about to fail.

I don't think it is a hardware problem. The hardware seems capable. I think Intel deliberately cripples the cards to save power. I think they are hung up on their low power usage 'centrino' technology, to the point that their cards are mostly useless.

Since I replaced my Intel with an Atheros, I have had no problems with connections. Even a very poor signal doesn't disconnect.

louis_edm : Hey folks,

I'm hoping someone can help me with this problem I've had with BOTH the 2200BG and 2100.. cards:

My connection will be lost suddenly and without reason every 10 minutes or so. This is regardless of the access point I'm connecting to. It also happens even if there's only one connection on the channel, so it's not interference. Signal strength is always excellent-- it happens even if I'm sitting right next to an access point.

I haven't been able to find one consistent course of action that causes the brief disconnection. Sometimes it's while I'm using the network, sometimes it's after it's been idle for a while, sometimes it's while it's sitting idle, without me trying to use it again.

I've loaded the most recent drivers for both cards, this doesn't help. Turning off the power management features does nothing either.

I have an IBM Thinkpad T41 with XP Pro.

I looked at the connection quality using NetStumbler. There is no gradual drop in signal strength or signal speed (speed judged by windows' messages), but every now and then there will be a 'blip', where the connection dies and is then re-established.

I've tried running both cards with Wireless Zero, and with IBM's provided Access Connections. The problem occurs for both.

Another symptom demonstrating the problem: if I'm in iTunes, I can watch some other people on the network - every ten minutes or so, they'll all disappear for a second and then reappear, indicative of a lost and reestablished connection.

I've spoken with other people who access the same networks with other computers. Apples have flawless connections. Another person has a tablet PC with a 2200BG, and he claims he hasn't had any problems with his connection. I still have to witness it for myself.

I'm at wits end here, and would appreciate any help you folks can offer. I don't know if the problem is software or laptop hardware, or if it's just Intel chipsets in general that are POSs. I'm considering looking at an Atheros card, but the fact that two different (albeit both Intel) cards give the same problem make me hesitant since this might not fix the problem, but cost more $$$.

Oh yes, I've also tried some of the other suggestions posed in this thread, minus tossing the piece of garbage out the window or buying a new laptop. My warranty period is gone, so replacement is out of the question.

HELP!!!!!!!!!

Thanks.
