If I want to find out information about something...say Travel to England, then I will go to a SEARCH ENGINE (altavista, yahoo, google, ask jeeves, etc), and then enter in my question, and get a list of pages that match my question.
I believe the point of a SEARCH ENGINE site is to help those looking for things on the internet. Companies like Altavista, Google, Yahoo, Ask Jeeves, etc all came around because people needed a way to find things on the web.
Yes, one of the ads may be for something I would want. Lets take the Travel to England again. My search on Altavista comes back with Travel Company Bob. I click on the link, and go to Bob's site. 2 months later, I am looking for travel to Germany. Somehow, 180Solutions got installed and is running on my PC. It then throws an Ad for Bob's Travel. Since I did not visit a search engine, and did not do a search for it(but, somehow it knew I wanted to travel by looking at cookies, search history, or whatever other crap it does), I WILL NOT CLICK ON IT. In this case, A company I used would not be used again. Yes, I would remember them, and assuming that my trip to England was good, I would have used them again. But, my point is, I was given an ad that I did not request, did not ask for, and now, that good company must suffer, because I refuse to use companies that engage in this kind of activity.
Point here, and I think I can speak for everyone...If I am not looking for something, then don't tell me what I should be buying,eating,drinking,etc.
Everyone has the power to use the internet to find what they are looking for. We don't need the help of these spyware/adware companies to do it for us. Real Companies like AltaVista were created to help us to do just that. Search the internet for what one may be looking for, and be done.
