Verizon NYC - Best DNS Servers?

I'm wondering what some of you out there are using for your preferred DNS and alternate DNS servers specifically in the New York Area. I've not been too successful with any of the "standard" ones posted or recommended by Verizon TS, but maybe someone who has been having problems who solved them with a good DNS server can post some good ones?

Also, does it matter how many people are using the same DNS server in terms of affecting speed in resolving names?

Thanks!

You're free to use anything, frankly. You can even run your own using TreeWalk. If I were you'd I'd avoid using any of the Verizon-Qwest resolvers. The GTEi ones are on Level3 and seem to work better, or you can just avoid it altogether by using DNS resolvers that colocation centers use.

Or, if you're really worried about it going bad, you can use one of the central DNS resolvers, but I don't know any of their IPs or I'd post 'em.

Hi, thanks for responding so quickly!

Bleek - THANK YOU! I'll try some of those!

Right, I know I can use anything I want, that's not my question. My question is for those in the NYC area that have been having issues with pages not loading or intermittent page loads and then fails - what DNS servers did they use to resolve that issue?

I just tried using 69.65.18.134 and although the page is loading very quickly, my speed dropped to way below my 3.0 / 768 throughput. Speed test is below

»/speedtests/34···12828776

My other question was is DNS servers have any affect on speed if there are too many people using a particular DNS server to resolve names?

I'll look into Treewalk, as I've seen it mentioned before, but I really don't want to install another peice of software for my dsl connection. I think this issue is a Verizon specific one and could probably be resolved without another program.

Only the time it takes the resolver to spit an IP back at you. It shouldn't affect speed because it's a completely different issue. If you were suddenly, however, to experience packet loss, that would affect both resolve time and speed.

Does anyone know why another thread on DNS servers was deleted?

Your best bet is to contact the forum hosts: gwion See Profile and BBR_InsUW See Profile.

I was in that thread briefly last night. It was going no-where a civilized discussion wanted to go. There was not any information there to help you with your question.

I'm having great success with the the SpeakEasy servers that were posted by Bleek.

Question for you Bleek: How did you find those? And thanks again.

Teohk: Thanks for the info on packet loss. I'll have to run a few more tests and find out if that's the issue.

Just some general info you pick-up from the forums, here, when you stick around long enough.

I beg your pardon, but there WAS info that DID help with my problem. Unless I missed something, I did not see what was NOT civlized about the discussion.

Sorry, when I left at about 10PM it looked like it was about to turn into a flame war.
Glad you got what you needed.
