But Fireworks is a program intended specifically for creating web-based backgrounds, layouts, and images.

'Simple' and 'incredible results' probably don't go together.

If you want the best, try using Photoshop. It has a steep learning curve, but will produce incredible results. You get out of it what you put into it though.
