What else should they do? They're a company. Companies are supposed to make money. And making the customer happy doesn't always equate to making more money.
I don't like what SBC is doing (so spare me any flames, folks), but expecting a company to have all these other (altruistic) purposes besides making money is crazy.
If SBC can dupe your neighbors and politicians into passing laws that kill munis, I'd blame your neighbors and politicians before I'd blame SBC, regardless of how much I may dislike SBC.
