Having endured the agony caused by the previous version of this patch I'm gonna sit this one out a few days and let you sort it out. I'll be very interested in your feedback.
One of the posters claims to have modified W98SE (only) OS files to specifically resolve this vulnerability. I cannot vouch for this and have not tried this patch (yet?). But, it might be worth looking at if this can fix the problem without the necessity of an additional running service.
