Re: pingpath is nice tool

I still do not see anything in pingpath that I cannot see in tracert, it is just an alternative format. Personally I like the format of tracert as it is more compact. If I need a better tool I would use pingplotter. Sorry but I am not convinced I need to add another application that does the same thing tracert does.

I always liked Ping Plotter because I can set it to refresh then do whatever I was doing that was making the connection go crazy.

Of course, it's the same information as traceroute, just graphical.

Now for nifty combination information, there was this one program that would combine whois, netblock ownership information etc.. It was handy for determining who owned an IP so you could send emails to the parent ISP for abusive traffic. Something reminded me about that, although, I can't imagine what.

See from the deleted post there is no such thing as free speech at BBR.

I guess not, but that is what happens after a warning to keep things on topic. Speaking of which... Please can we keep this thread on topic. A discussion of good tools has not occurred in a while and is interesting. Talking about "Free Speech" on a web site is not particularly in this forum. Thank you for your cooperation!

Yeah Sam Spade! I couldn't remember the name of it. I googled for a bit and then just gave up. Bookmarked, Downloaded and saved! I don't know how I lost it, normally it would have been in my handyutils directory

Other tools I use ( or have used that I like ).

Vision from foundstone
Shows open ports on win2k systems very well. Handy if you wonder why your machine has 31337 open and what program opened it

Nmap of course, but when it's acting flaky on win32 I use:

Super Scanner ( also a foundstone app )

SnapTimePro
Not really a network tool, but handy to have a stopwatch on your computer. People are always talking about how long things take, and this is a way to quantify it.

ethereal win32. Handy sniffer. Pretty easy to use.

NetStumbler. Kind of outdated now days considering most cards come with a "ap finder" that works.

of course the remote management stuff we all use, UltraVNC, Putty, SecureCRT ( not free ) for ssh when putty doesn't cut it. Another bit that goes along with UltraVNC is the fastpush scripts.

I don't have a free graphical ftp client I like. I use SmartFTP, but it's annoying. The old LeapFTP isn't free and is buggy ( well the older version I have, new version was unusable for some reason I don't remember ).

BHODemon is also handy for seeing what has been added to your browser ( and disabling it ).

Alot of the sysinternals tools I use so much I forget I have them and they aren't part of windows. Just fyi, some virus scanners pickup certian parts of sysinternals tools as "suspicious" due to the fact that some trojans/worms use the tools to install themselves, create registry hives the like.

Anybody got any other favorite win32 tools?

Look up Filezilla for a free w32 GUI FTP open source utility.

I use a library of Unix utilities compiled for Win32 that came with a Hummingbird X server product.

ls
cat
zcat
grep
tail
head
tee
tar
sed
awk

I also use the dig utility that is part of BIND. They have a download for Win32 that includes all the DNS utilities.

Then there is sdelete. I use this heavily on my work laptop to remove all traces of any personal data. If you need to make a file or anything completely unrecoverable, this is the tool.
