DSLi and SupraTelecom (and BS.. opps... bellsouth)

I have had Supra and DSLi for a little over two years now. I am VERY satisfied with both of them in all aspects. Where my problem comes in is I pay an extra $20 per month to Supra for my DSL through them. This is a BS thing? Yes?? By my understanding this is a "fee imposed by BS". Am I incorrect in this? Any idea how I can challenge this fee (and win??)? Is it something 'imposed' on Supra because of the litigation going on between bs (this doesn't mean bellsouth. It means BullSh*t) and Supra? Or is it something that I can get taken off my Supra bill *without* losing my phone and DSL service? I do need a dial tone from what I understand.

My other problem is I have read if I change phone providers (telecom or dsl) bs **requires** me to go with them (read: won't change me to another DSL provider of my choice nor another telecom provider?!?!?!)

I really need to be enlightened in these aspects. Any help out there?

Chuck

PS - The *LAST* thing I want to happen is end up with ANYTHING that I have to pay BS directly on. I demand freedom of choice with telecom and broadband and I think I won't get that.

If you request that Supra remove the charge they will convert you to a UNE-P line and you will loose your DSL service. BellSouth provides Supra with two types of lines, one supports DSL the other will not. The cost that these lines are sold to Supra is higher for the ability to run DSL over it. That cost is passed on to you.

Hope this helps.

The way I'd guess it's working is Supra can provide you with a cheaper line because they rent from Bellsouth only the small portion of your copper pair that uses telephone signals. If you are going to use DSL which takes up the rest of the line, Bellsouth charges more. But I could be completely off.

That's why I switched from DSLI to Comcast. DSLI was great but it wasn't worth and additional $240 a year to stay with them. Supra's rates have increased where there's not that big a difference between them and BS. Now I have Vonage and am saving even more. My phone bill is $27.24 after taxes and includes unlimited long distance.
