 | Actually, there are many people on AOL that have formed online friendships and continue to use AOL for that reason. The difference being that when you have a broadband connection, you only pay 9.95 a month (IF you know how to get that rate, of course), just like you might for the content of any other for pay subscription site for it's content. Once you dont have them as your ISP, life is better. For that matter, AOL's mail, though proprietary, does have excellent controls available, such as allowed lists and blocked lists, not to mention you get 7 of them and they are easy to change.
Besides, the AOL chats, filled with stupes as they are, are highly entertaining because of that very fact. If one is so inclined, one can get maximum entertainment for his internet dollar. After all, 9.95/month is only the price of 1 movie ticket, yet the entertainment lasts the whole month long.
As much as one might have a dislike for AOL, it DOES serve a need and the smart ones leave it-at least as their ISP-as soon as an alternitive is available. The others-Joe and Jane box o rocks-stay because it serves their needs and they simply dont care.
