 | Death to @Home!! Recommended Seattle DSL provider Here's a question for you:
I currently use @Home's DSL service. It's OK as far as it goes, but it's enormously frustrating to have the server crash for 2 days & lose all yr. outgoing AND incoming e mail. This seems to happen every 3-4 mos. Also, they only support OE, which is a woefully dumb piece of software (compared to Outlook, say).
So my question: do any of you know of DSL service here in Seattle that is more reliable & might support something better than OE?
Regarding my own usage, I use DSL for personal/home business purposes. There are only two of us using the service here in my home on one PC.
Pls. reply, if possible, to this e mail address richards1052@home.com
Thanks, Richard

In solace, yes the @Home mail system does suffer sporadic outages. I had a 2-day outage this past weekend. That's the reason I keep 3 email accounts: @Home, @Work and @Hotmail.com Some inconvenience there, but I can always get critical mail in/out through one of the three. Unless of course, someone cuts my cable!;) Those that I exchange critical/business email with know the score and use alternate means to send when they get a reject. Again, inconvenient but better still than overnighting via UPS. -- The only virus on my computer is Windows. |

 | reply to Silverstein Add me to that list of not having any knowledge of @home DSL. And I've also never had a problem with mail, too.
On a similar note, I should also state, that if you use an ISP and leave your mail on THEIR server after reading it, you should be drawn and quartered. ALWAYS download your mail to your local machine and clean up your mess on the mail server. Conserves disk space on the server and allows them to keep costs down. ISPs aren't responsible for providing backup copies of your mail. -- "Rome did not create a great empire by having meetings. They did it by killing all those who opposed them." |

Wheelert - as I mostly work from the apartment, the way I have it set up is that I clear off the server when downloading at the apartment. If I read at work, then I leave it on the server, come home and get it again (and clear off the server). Here's one for you: Tried to send email to a postmaster@ address the other day - daemon sent it back, his mailbox had reached it's limit!:) And I don't think it was from heavy traffic, but more from neglect because someone else responded that they would get it cleaned up.;) -- The only virus on my computer is Windows. |

 | reply to Silverstein Richard, Yeah @home totally sucks when it comes to their e-mail server being down quite frequently. That's why it's smart to get one of the many freebie online ones like hotmail, etc. Anyway, I was finally sick and tired of using that piece of crap Outlook Express too and figured out how to get it working through Eudora (although @home gave no support whatsoever......"You can't access your e-mail at all unless you use Outlook Express provided with our software."). It has been awhile so I don't exactly remember the entire process, but get the latest version of Eudora and then put in the settings for the @home mail server and it should work. |

I just had to set up a new account and give it the SMTP and POP3 names (which you can see in your Outlook account's properties, I believe) and I was good to go. -- The only virus on my computer is Windows. |
