lookin at cav dsl in newport news va

Been reading through reviews and forum posts and it seems like cav dsl has some serious reliability and customer service problems...wondering if anyone has had any experiance with the 10 mb down package. I'd be roughly 8000 feet from co, just looking for fast and reliable during ALL hours of the day, I game on days off/evenings sporadically, so packet loss, and outages are out of the question. Anyone have this service in this area? thanks

as things are now , You could expect to suffer. based on your location you'll be routed through cavalier's washington router which is pretty hosed . The speed is nice during off peak times but anything on peak sucks ass. ive seen speed tests hover around 9mbps only to drop to 500kbps , and the latency is awfull too ( imagine a 50 ping on a good day). Theyre supposed to be repairing this at the end of april ... ie:soon

Doesn't appear that it is just a D.C. router. I am coming out of Richmond and the link between Cavtel and QWEST is running at about 175ms latency right now. It normally runs around 6ms.

This has been an ongoing issue with them for me, and frankly I am getting sick of it. I use a lot of VoIP stuff and a 175ms latency jump across one hop is absurd. They have been continually saying they are going to get it fixed, but I will only believe it when I see it.

You would think they would want to get it fixed as it is also affecting their web site from users outside of Cavtel.

traceroute to 130.81.12.58 (130.81.12.58), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets

9 130.81.12.58 (130.81.12.58) 110.335 ms 109.943 ms 104.360 ms

Notice the latency jump between hops 3 and 4...

I'm 9,700 ft from Willow Grove, PA CO. I consistently get between 5 & 6 Mb down (my hardware limit for now, but 5Mb is fast enough for me) 800 Kb up. Occasionally it drops below 3Mb. It was difficult at first, a couple of 30 min. phone holds, but the cavtel people wanted to help. Now that it works it hasn't stopped once, but did drop to 1Mb range for about 15 minutes once. Most of my problems turned out to be within my own house wiring. Latency runs 30 ms plus time to distant servers.
