Actually the City of Houston did not sue Vonage. While the incident with 911 was in Houston, it is the office of Texas (state) Attorney General (who is in Austin, the TX capital) that sued Vonage.
So it looks like the 3 states are currently suing Vonage: Texas, Michigan and Connecticut. |

This is the kind of stuff that makes companies change the way they do business. Once Vonage takes faster steps to providing true 911, many of the others will follow suit.
Blame the legal system as much as you people want, but it's stuff like this that makes things safer for consumers everywhere. Do you think we'd have seatbelts, airbags or any safety related items if it weren't for lawsuits forcing manufacturer's hands.
You people need to think about things a little more before bashing the general consumer. Not everyone is a blazing genius like everyone of you people here at DSLR. |

krazz join:2004-10-08 New Brunswick, NJ | Goober, you must live in a cave. Have you seen ANY news articles posted ANYWHERE stating how the Bells refuse to play ball with 911? They are just BEGINNING to come around to getting their act together, and the FCC is probably very close to forcing it. What is Vonage supposed to do when the Bells refuse to open up their 911 network? Plant their own telephone poles for 911? Yeah, that makes a BUNCH of sense. You probably do not have an (intelligent) answer to this, so I suppose you will not even reply.
Get your head out of the toilet man, and try to catch up on current events before you make a bafoon out of yourself. |

 | reply to Goober Thats just it. If people would READ they wouldn't have to be blazing geniuses, live off of others knowledge god knows you obviously came here to sponge off them anyways!! Shit like that is why nothing can ever stay reasonably priced because you got MORONS sueing the hell out of companies that seem to offer ok service for an ok cost. Then, theres the Morons who back this kind of action, then bitch cause everything is so over priced. Get a clue! Bottom line if you cant read then dont sign up for the shit, period! This country is a sad excuse for a democracy, hell its a sad case for communism for christ sake! Our government will let shit like healthcare and gas drive people to the poor house or to their death whichever comes first but as soon as they think someone or business is not paying enough tax to line their greedy pockets wam sue them...go figure and they say its for the people...yea right! |

You really should learn how to interpret what you read. Then again, you're like some 15 year old lecturing me, so I shouldn't expect more from you I suppose.
And, this type of lawsuit will indeed allow Vonage to offer 911 at a faster rate. If the Bells are actually hampering true 911 adoption, it will come out in the lawsuit and that will cause the laws to change.
By the way, you're right. I would hate to make a "bafoon" out of myself. Thanks for saving me from that horrible fate. |

Please show us where there is any misrepresentation? It is blatant on all sign up screens, follow up emails, and located on the Vonage web portal. Would you speak poorly of clorox if some fool didn't read the side of the bottle and drank a nice tall glass of it? Maybe clorox should send everyone who buys their product an email telling them that if they drink it, they may very well die. Vonage sends every customer an email telling them to activate 911. Vonage cannot be blamed because people do not know how to read (or choose not to). |

They need to have in place a clear warning like cigarette manufacturers must do on their packs of cigarettes and related advertisements.
Maybe something like this right in the middle of the web page in big letters that has to be checked (maybe list the sentences so that each one has to be checked) before registration is allowed:
WARNING: VONAGE DOES NOT OFFER TRUE 911 SERVICE. YOU CAN NOT BE LOCATED AUTOMATICALLY. IN AN EMERGENCY, 911 FROM VONAGE MAY BE LIMITED OR NOT WORK AT ALL AND YOU MAY NOT BE ABLE TO RECEIVE LIFE-SAVING ASSISTANCE. ONLY YOUR PHONE COMPANY CAN OFFER TRUE 911 SERVICE.

Re: Correction: Houston sued -> Texas AG sued That's right. How many screens and piles of information must the user go through in order to hook up their Vonage service? Then, how many does it take to order a POTS line?
Since Vonage claims that their service is just like a regular phone, only cheaper, they are misrepresenting their service. In fact one could argue that Vonage skimmed on developing their features, including 911, to make more profit by selling below the cost of what it takes to provide a reliable phone service. When people get hurt or die because they couldn't call 911 that becomes criminal liability.
The Bells are hampering any competitor from using their network because the administration has given them the pass to do that (right or wrong). That is not an excuse to provide a crappy service.
Last, it's not just Vonage screwing up, it is all VoIP provides, Vonage just happened to be the sacrificial lamb. |

GooberPremium join:2000-12-17 Naperville, IL kudos:4 | Agreed. Vonage is certainly the test case here. Sometimes these things are necessary. VOIP will eventually be the better for it.
Everyone just needs to be patient. |
