So you are no better than the pirates you are criticizing. -- If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is, infinite. | What irks me the most is that my XP is legit and paid for, but I tend to upgrade my system on frequent intervals. Now everytime I do something simple like change out a DVD burner I have to revalidate and call the 1-800 number, plead my case that it is my legal copy and I only have it on my 1 PC even if pieces of that PC have changed since I originally installed XP. Well almost everything has changed except the sound card, floppy drive and case. Anyway it is a pain in the arse and I am almost to the point of buying another copy just so I don't have to make those calls. |

If you purchased a retail copy of XP and your machine gets trashed, I believe they will allow you to transfer to another machine once. The person who did this told me that they ask a million questions to determine if the original machine is non-operational, though. It's not an easy process. |
|
 | All they ask is, "is this the first time you are activating your copy of Windows XP?"
I say no.
Then they say, "may I ask why you are requesting activation today?"
I say, because I'm installing it on my computer. (None of their damn business beyond that).
Then they ask "do you have this copy of XP installed on any other machine?"
I say no. (Which is the truth - 1 copy / 1 machine).
That's it. It's pretty painless. Just use a tone of voice like, "you will activate this product". Confidence. I paid good money for it. If I need to do a reinstall, or something after a component change, so be it. |
