 | i don't like this one bit. for one thing, the price of an authentic license is roughly half the price for a new system, even in some retail circles. the way that a lot of computer manufacturers like to do things now is to create a windows backup on a seperate drive so the customers do not have the actual install disc available to them in the event they choose to (or need to) reformat the entire drive. for what it would cost to take the machine to be fixed, i can see where a lot of people would rather just go out and buy a whole new machine.
another factor is the software bundled in with many systems these days. the majority of people rarely utilize or even know about all that trial version software that comes packaged with the computers they buy. i don't even want to go into the number of systems i've seen with remnants of those programs running in the background and nibbling away at the system's resources. if a user purchased a dell computer with a dell version of windows xp, would that user only be entitled to a replacement for that particular version? if they opted for a legit copy of xp sans the bloat, would they now have to pay for a secondary license while the one that came with their system goes unused?
as it is, there are already plenty of places online where folks can download working windows service packs stitched together from people who have licensed copies and have already made the upgrade to their system. heck, even the p2p networks would have a ready supply of slipstreamed copies of windows with service packs preinstalled. the genuine authenticity program may very well prevent users with unlicensed copies from downloading their updates directly from microsoft, but given the alternative sites offering patches and other upgrades i fail to see how this would slow any of the pirates down. |
