| | | Re: What About Other Copper Services? When I asked that question I was told that was not possible. All copper is gone. No DSL can be run there.
Of course you could always go back to your beloved Comcast.:p
J/K of course. | |

| Re: What About Other Copper Services? I plan to use EVDO (which, of course, doesn't use copper) as a backup connection if Verizon ever deems me worthy of FiOS (which they don't plan to do anytime soon).
So I won't want to keep my copper service forever, but I WILL want to keep it during the transition - just until I'm comfortable relying on FiOS as a primary connection, and until I get around to re-configuring my LAN.

The phone does go over the fiber now. They just moved the wires from inside the house from the customer side of the demark to the voice port on the new ONT. My switch from DSL to Fios took all of ten minutes. I did have to reset a few DNS settings to a couple of test websites I host from home.
As far has having DSL and Fios at the same time so you can transition that's a question for a good tech.
Also I did unplug the power supply to the ONT and it got about 5 hours of runtime. The data port does go dead though as the backup power is only for voice.
Interesting question though, if you get Verizon's Broadwing VoIP does that service survive a power outage. I assume that Vonage and other VoIP providers die with the data side.

Mine will probably take a little bit longer - I'll need to run ethernet from the ONT to my HO. I'm sure VZ would do it, but I'd rather have them hook up just a single computer - the one that's pretty close to where the ONT will be. That way I can test the FiOS at my leisure. I imagine it'll take me around a month to become comfortable with it, but I can also imagine loving it immediately.

| | During the initial stages of my subdivision the builder said BST came in with the original plan to put copper in the ground. They then did a 180º, ripped it all out, and dropped fiber instead.
In the case of Verizon and their Fios I do not think you should worry, because Verizon already has shown their willingness to whoesale it to other ISPs.
