Re: **Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved Modem losing sync has never caused mine to lock up, and should never do something like that. That sounds like a hardware defect, or else a symptom of something else wrong.
Example: what if the modem's internal settings are causing it to run out of RAM (memory) under some situation? When out of memory, it just might act the way you describe.
An idea: 1) Go into advanced settings, the final page, and disable auto-logout (so the telnet session will never time out) 2) Use telnet to log into the modem 3) Leave that telnet session logged in until the modem "locks up". 4) See if the telnet still responds. If so, it is not really locked up. 5) To watch more carefully, every once in a while cat /proc/net/ip_conntrack|wc cat /proc/meminfo
...and see what your connection table size and memory usage looks like over time.
As for scripting... yes it is possible but more complex and system-specific. If it takes them a looong time to fix this, perhaps someone will write a little app to reload dynamic data into the modem. (Wish we had the time but we don't right now...) |

 | reply to MrPete7 I just wanted to say thank you for these fixes.
This problem was really bugging the crap out of me. I use my DSL connection from work all the time and it's a real pain if i've forgotten to reboot the modem after having a popular torrent going for a couple of days; linux distro for example.
All of a sudden i can't even ping the modem. God forbid i actually try to connect to anything.
Now, i just need to mod the firmware image that comes with the recovery utility and flash the modem so that it runs 'em automatically! |

This bug/fix has now been reported to Qwest and escalated to ActionTec engineering. 1.5 months of no-glitch DSL. Ahhhhhh :-D
And now we learn to be patient while the Powers That Be implement the patch permanently, inside the modem. |

dks7 join:2004-05-31 Omak, WA | I have to say I have been using this for a month now. Not only does my modem not lockup anymore on me and I don't have to reboot it all the time, but my speeds have improved a little. My max was 764.4KB/sec. Now its this.
Bandwidth: (Current Downstream: 782.83kb/s ¤ Current Upstream: 15.06kb/s) |

 | reply to Brisk said by Brisk:is there a way to put all of this into a script? I'm coming to this thread a little late, and from a different product set. The D-Link T-series products (DSL-504T, DSL-G604T etc) are also based on the TI AR7 processor, and also run MontaVista Linux and the BusyBox toolset/shell. As you might suspect, they suffer from the same problems - and the 'fix' is the same...
To answer the question: YES, you can put the necessary commands into a script.
Read about it here: »www.expansys.com/forumthread.asp···an=D-LIN Edit the script for the IP address of the Actiontec and differences in the Telnet login username/password, and it should work just fine. Adjust any of the settings as you wish, although I'm pretty certain they will be OK.
Hope this helps |

MrPete7 join:2005-05-08 Colorado Springs, CO | Thanks, rperkin!
We'll play with this a bit and attempt to develop a reliable install/fix.
This is a timely addition to the info: due to recent storms, our GT701 reset itself across an extended power failure. I think I'm gonna set things up to reload the dynamic config parameters every .
I would *NOT* recommend all the parameters used in the article you reference. Some of them are way short for maintaining stable outside connections... only good for short term stuff. (One of them will force a connection to drop after only 20 minutes!)
Thanks again, |

Re: **Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved! The new Firmware is set to come out on July 11 2005. |
|
 | Re: **Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved I'm not a Qwest customer (I'm using th GT-701 in the UK) but I'm experiencing all the problems listed here and cannot get a fix. Telneting a reboot gets things working ok for about an hour, then the failed connections and the usenet 'connect error 10060's start again. It's been much worse since updating to the latest non-Qwest firmware (3.0.1.0.5.4). Actiontec support are worse than useless. Any suggestions? Is the July update for non-Qwest as well as Qwest customers? Can non-Qwest users use the Qwest firmware? Is it more recent? |
|
 | It works on UK as well - I flashed my router to the QWEst firmware and it is connecting to UKONLINE 8MB service without any issues. |
|
 | Thanks for that, I'll give the Qwest firmware a try. Does anyone know why there are two versions? If the Qwest version can be used by all, why bother issuing a non-Qwest version? |
|
 | Interestingly, I just received this from Actiontec "support" in response to (the fourth time of) me asking if I could use the Qwest firmware:
"The answer to your QWEST question is a loud, final, and resounding, NO. That firmware is only for use with QWEST DSL customers and contains specific settings and connection information for QWEST DSL service. The recovery file can be found at this link. I have also included an instruction sheet for performing the recovery. Use the link at the end of the email text to access the ftp site."
I don't really think a 'recovery' is likely to help much. Does anyone think differently? |

If you are able to telnet to the modem, you can probably fix this. Try an "ls" command on the following path. If it doesn't work, remove one sub-folder at a time and repeat until it works. That will tell you/us where to begin. (If the original path DOES work, use "cat .../*" where "..." is the path here: /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter |

Re: **Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved! After telnetting to the modem, rebooting I paste that "stuff" and hit enter and it gives me a no such directory error. Perhaps I need to update my current firmware? I am using 3.60.1.0.4.1-GT701-WG
The reason I am using this firmware is because I actually stay connected to a MMO I play. The firmware I was using booted me from the game every min or so for some reason. |

 | Hello all!
Here is my expect code I run from my Linux machine behind the actiontec:
I typically make a "fix_actiontec.expect" script, and call it as: ./fix_actiontec.expect from cron or whatever you like.
------ cut here ------
#!/usr/bin/expect
set site [lindex $argv 0] spawn telnet $site expect "dem login:" send "admin\r" expect "Password:" send "admin\r" expect "# " send "echo 8192 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_max\r" sleep 1 expect "# " send "echo 3600 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_established\r" sleep 1 expect "# " send "echo 60 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_close_wait\r" sleep 1 expect "# " send "exit\r\r"
------ cut here ------
Also, if anyone at qwest is reading this, it'd be great if you'd just put the above echos here in the actiontec -> /etc/init.d/rcS in the block with all the other ones. Should take very little time to do, and would solve a lot of issues.
Or, you could post instructions on allowing us customers to modify that file ourselves. |

Re: **Several** ActionTec GT-701WG issues resolved! My ISP - UK Online, supplied the Actiontec 701 router, which I took because it was "supported". I suffered from many of the symptoms described here:- Loss of connectivity Loss of DNS Inability to connect to the router
The only fix was to reboot it. Flashed the 701 to the latest version 3.0.1.0.6.0 and that made little difference.
Tried the magic solution echo 8192 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_maxecho 3600 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_establishedecho 60 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/netfilter/ip_conntrack_tcp_timeout_close_wait
It has been running fine for 3 days now with no re-boot required (used to be every 3 hours) - BitComet is running better and I can still surf the net on both of my PC's
I would recommend this to anyone suffering from the connection problems on the Actiontec 701. Many Thanks to MrPete for improving my life!!
