| 911 has a real phone number... Ma and Pa voip service user dials 911 and that number is forwared to 1-888-my-local-emergency-dispatch-center-number, pretty simple so the problem here is..... ? That's how cell phones used to do it and you know what the big problem there was? The telcos wouldn't give that super secret real phone number to the cell provider, that was the only holdup to having 911 on your cell phone in some areas back in the day. -- Location: N48°05.3' W119°48.5' |

Talk about conspiracy theorists. |

So it had nothing to do with a single cell tower providing cellular coverage to multiple local public safety jurisdictions? |

Is it just me, or are there really more and more slashdunces around here every day? |

They are frequently called "Ring down" lines. The numbers are still listed in most blue pages across the country.
As a matter of fact, my town hands out a directory with all the township officials phone numbers, and includes the "super secret" number right in the hand out as an alternative to 911 in a non emergency.
Calls go to the same place, anyway |

| reply to firephoto Sorry, i guess the tech guy that built the 911 system here when it went into service didn't have a clue to what he was doing so that's why they hired him.
911 for cellular first went to the state patrol dispatch here until they could link the call directly to the closest emergency services dispatch. That secret number might not have been secret but if you can't use it till the wired telco says you can then it just as well be truly secret. I'm not sure if it was qwest, u.s. west or what the telco was but they were pretty cluless when it came to fixing or providing proper wired pairs for dispatches phone and radio system.
Now on the topic of the voip phone systems, with the hardware they can make the dialing of 911 go anywhere so all they need is the proper non 911 phone number for the proper responding agency and when that line rings at the dispatch center they shouldn't see any difference from a normal land line or cellular call. Requiring this isn't a bad thing but if getting access to that number isn't an open and free process then that also needs to be properly fixed so this access to these lines isn't denied to anyone or any company for providing 911 service. -- Location: N48°05.3' W119°48.5' |
