Re: 2.53 on DLINK CANADA?

anon : In reference to using 11a:
That's a good escape hatch from the 2.4ghz crunch, for well, as long as it takes everyone to go down and get 11a. It's not a long term solution to bandwidth issues.

In reference to 624 stability:
I have a DI-624 Cx. It's been stable and never had a reboot issue since the day I got it. It's run 2.42, 2.50 & 2.52b60 firms.

In reference to Turbo mode causing slowness:
That's nuts; for me it has always caused quickness and lots of it.

Why they're taking static turbo out:
Because, just over a year ago, Broadcom discovered that the channel bonding mode of the Atheros chipsets causes them to overrun EVERY channel on the 2.4gHz band. Usually, channels 1, 6, & 11 are non-overlapping (well, at least with enough volume to have usable signals). When the bonding portion of Turbo is on, the combined signal width overlaps 1 & 11 when the datalink is pushing full bandwidth. All this translates to Atheros devices with Turbo scramble the 11G compliant signals of Broadcom devices withing 60-100 feet. Atheros' answer was "Dynamic Turbo." Apparently, WIFI is getting on their asses about leaving static turbo in.

My thoughts on this:
Hrm. I really want QOS. But more than WMM, or wireless QOS, I want beefy band shaping that allows my VoIP connection to remain intact when I send an email, or anything that uses a little of my 768K uplink. There is only one residential router that does this right now, that's the Linksys w/ Sevesoft's Firmware.

Finally, I run static-turbo. It's fast, yeah. But really just because my notebook's (Compaq 1830) audio circuitry (ESS Solo) "plays" the wireless signal. Yup. 11b goes plop plop plop as it works. 11g makes a faster bpbpbpbpbpbpbpbpbp sound. Turbo - dead silent. So noise. That's why I use it. Lol. My secret it out.

So now, I've gotta choose between new features (my wireless works fine when it can get IP's from the router, my only problem) and the obnoxious farting noise 802.11g makes when using my notebook.

Here's the real solution as I see it:
-Make turbo modes that bond 1 5Ghz channel with 1 2.4Ghz. Make it so any of the channels can be cross-bonded. Why the hell arn't they doing this now? (or are they?)
-Better QOS and planned use of wireless signals (that's what they are working on with 802.11e)
-MIMO : to have made such an understated appearance, MIMO technology is pretty crazy-go-nuts in its ability to make sense of reflection noise, etc. It really is something special (though I know little of its current use in dlink devices).
-Now that wireless networks have an UBER-ridiculous level of security, focus on better compression of both signal and protocol data.

Argh.
Red Beard (rob)

I can deal with slower wireless throughput, compromising a bit of additional stability and programmable features. I have yet to have the full time to play with my new router, but rest assured, it's performing very well with DD-WRT firmware.

Firmware 2.53 killed static turbo. Dynamic turbo kicks in long after a big transfer is going, probably like more than 10 seconds or so into the transfer, but the turbo cuts in and out. Perhaps the channel bonding was a great idea, but too much interference around channel 6.

I upgraded from my solid trusty DI-624 rev C2 to a DI-784 to get the SuperA with Turbo mode. From where I am in my apartment complex, I can see about 15 other 11b/g APs around, with most of them on Channel 6 default out of the box. Who knows how many 2.4GHz cordless phones or Bluetooh devices are around.

Now, with SuperA Turbo mode, I have static channel bonding turned on all the time, have plenty of channels to choose from to use it (not that it matters, since no one else around me has 11a :) ), and I'm now back to a solid ~50mbps real throughput (I used to get this speed in 11g on my DI-624 back when I lived at my old place, and there were no 11b/g APs around... sigh).

Also, the DI-784 does SuperG and SuperA concurrently, so while the rest of my roommates can still use the 11g connection, I get the SuperA Turbo all to myself at the same time with no performance hit!

The icing on the cake, I got it from Fry's a few weeks ago for $45 after a $20 mail-in rebate. It's been rock solid so far, the only reboots I've had in the last two weeks were intentional due to settings changes and playing around with it.

As the ultimate test, I used my wired desktop computer to Remote Desktop into my laptop with full resolution and 24-bit color. I then streamed a Quicktime movie file off the desktop for playback onto the laptop... through the Remote Desktop connection, and it was SMOOTH! The audio was a bit delayed only because once it comes through the Remote Desktop, there's no guarantee of any sort of time synchronization in the RDP protocol I'm aware of. I watched the downstream data from the desktop to the wireless 11a laptop go up with the size of the video files, while the upstream data from the laptop to the desktop went way way up due to the raw video forwarding of the remote desktop connection. After having this connection up for a few minutes, the upstream data easily surpassed 1GB, and by eyeballing the upstream byte counter, it was easily in the 50-60mbps range.

I'm a happy camper. :) For those of you who have ditched the DI-624 to go to a Linksys, and for those of you who have ditched the Linksys to come to a DI-624, and for those of you who say both D-Link and Linksys are terrible, perhaps it's time to think about how crowded 2.4GHz is around your neighborhood. There's no need to give up throughput at a similar price point. I hope Fry's runs this deal again soon, so I can pick up a few more for my friends and family.

I should add all my tests were with WPA encryption turned on, which is even more amazing.
