Star wars

If pirated films affect hollywood's bottom line, then how come Revenge of the Sith set an opening day record for revenue?

In fact, how come each year a new film seems to break all the different records, be it single day, opening week, etc.

Their point is, without the piracy, they'd have broken the record EVEN MORE!!

Inflation and higher ticket prices? All of these records talk about the revenue as if it were a constant. There should be some attempt to show figures that are measured in a constant unit. A movie that sold X tickets (at $4 a ticket) in its first day did better than one that only sold .8X tickets (at $6 a ticket) on opening day even though the $4 movie grossed less money ($4X vs $4.8X). Many of these figures ignore the ticket cost or the value of the money (inflation). To see a true comparison, you must compensate for the fact that $1 today is worth less than $1 ten years ago. Add in the fact that the cost to see a movie was less 10 years ago and you can have a situation where that 10 year old record was still better than this years record once you compensate for the cost of a ticket and measure the cost in inflation adjusted $s.

Only if they were not doing "sell out" business. If all the seats are sold, you have a fixed amount you can gross no matter how many people did not see it the first day due to viewing it via a Pirate Copy or being told that it stank so do not go see it.

Note: I am responding to the general comment that Piracy affected a movie's opening day record not the specific claim about Sith.
