Re: CounterSpy users - opinions wanted I installed this newer version and I see what you mean about being able to easily use it now as only an on demand scanner. That is nice.
BUT, SIGH, it still finds false positive keyloggers! I cannot believe Counterspy has not gotten this awful problem fixed by now.
It tells me that Installshield is actually a keylogger named TinySpyAgent. Geez....
Then it tells me that nVidia Keyhole is also a nasty keylogger named AB System Spy.
Ridiculous.
On a lighter note it wants to kill my Passport cookie because it "spies" on me. How will I get into BetaPlace? Seriously, MS is killing Passport soon anyhow. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. They're very good about correcting the fp's. -- God put me on this Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now, I am so far behind I will never die. |

 | reply to DSL_Steve I Highly recommend CS and Run It on All 4 of My Machines. All Win XP, so I cannot comment on WIN ME compatibility. All run resident and Never a False positive. Updates automatically. IMO It is very user friendly.

Mele20Premium join:2001-06-05 Hilo, HI kudos:4 1 edit | reply to mers2 I just sent Sunbelt the log. I must hold the record for the number of Keylogger FPs that Counterspy has found and I only had CounterSpy installed for about a week with the first version and it found so many Keylogger FPs and now I install again and it finds new ones! I must have an unusual box.
Edited to say that I checked Symantec's site and they told me which registry key to look for TinySpyAgent. I don't have the key. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. I am thinking of buying it, but I don't really think I might need it.. I am running Norton on one box with MSAS and Panda Platinum alone on another. Panda seems to be VERY aggressive with spyware... |

 | reply to DSL_Steve Well, I have to take back my previous statment about CS not having anymore False positives. After updating yesterday to the latest def. file, It is now detecting the UN-INSTALLERS .exe´s of:
Free Download Manager MozBackUp and Master Converter.
as "SurfSideKick Adware"
C:\Archivos de programa\Free Download Manager\unins000.exe C:\Archivos de programa\Master Converter\unins000.exe C:\Archivos de programa\MozBackup 1.4\unins000.exe
After quarantined them, I foolishly deleted the residual registry entries and now these programs do not appear on the add/remove programs control panel. BTW, does any one know how to return these entries to the Add/remove prog. CP without having to reinstall the programs?
Thanks |

 | Thanks DSL_Steve,
It is not a major issue, since I can always un-quarantine the un-install.exe´s. and go to their respective programs folders, and run them from there if I need to. The problem is that carelessly I deleted the orfan registry entries with CCleaner, and therefore, the Add/remove control panel do not show them, so the fault is all mine.:(

 | reply to DSL_Steve Well, I can tell you...I am very surprised to read about the FP's issue concerning CS. I run Windows XP Pro with SP2 and CS v1.0.29 and I have had absolutely no problems with FP's. I recently upgraded from previous version 1.0.26 which was also clean, never had an FP issue. I stick by my first comments/post about this prog.; in my opinion it's one of the best anti-spyware apps out there. |
|
 | I agree with you! It is one of the best Anty Spyware programs and the technical support is quick and corteous, and I can deal with an eventual FP every now and then as long as the program protects my computer as it has been doing. I have it as my only Anty Spyware resident program. I could also enable either the Ad-Watch or Tea-timer, but I have confidence on its real time prortection and thus I disabled the other two residents. |

I just heard from Anita. CS told me when I installed the latest version 1.0.29 yesterday that the definitions were up to date as of June 2, 2005. I didn't notice then that the version of the definitions was 144!! If I had noticed that I would have known they were NOT up to date, even though CS said they were, because I had version 144 back in March before I stopped using CS. CS needs to fix that misleading statement in the GUI as someone new to CS sure wouldn't ever catch that ver 144 of the definitions was not the current one! I finally caught it today only because Anita asked me to doublecheck the version of CS that I had and the definitions version because she said those Keylogger FPs I had were corrected in def. ver. 150.
So, I now have def. ver. 182. I ran another scan and all that was found was an adware FP that others are reporting that has to do with Mozbackup. It doesn't find even the Passport cookie now.
I am still having a conflict between CS and Fx though. But much less of a conflict than what I had with 1.0.26 and the problem may be Fx rather than CS. I run an older version of Fx and the latest version may not have a conflict. I guess I had finally better upgrade my Fx. -- Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. As to a conflict between Fx and CS I'm running the Fx 1.04 with no problems with CS 1.0.29. -- God put me on this Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now, I am so far behind I will never die. |

WFOPremium join:2001-08-27 San Ramon, CA | reply to DSL_Steve I've been running CS for at least 4 months. The first week I had a couple FPs. Nothing since. It is my favorite anti-spyware app. |

2 edits | reply to DSL_Steve Well, I downloaded the trial version of CounterSpy and installed it. It didnt take long to realize it doesnt play well with Windows Me (as others have said). Lots of freezes and it couldnt get through a complete scan without locking up. It also immediately gave me a false positive from its resident detection process saying my windows update file WUAUCLT.EXE was a possible a Trojan, do I want to delete it?. Yeh right. I also noticed it gobbled up a huge chunk of my resources 20%! Time to uninstall.
So then I go to uninstall and find it has a sloppy uninstaller leaving behind a machine run registry startup item (SUNASDTSERV) in msconfig. After searching the registry and finding all kinds of entries left behind I decided this is where making a System Restore checkpoint before installing CounterSpy is going to pay off and it did.
So much for considering this program. [Next

mers2Premium,MVM join:2004-03-20 USA kudos:8 | I'm surprised you had a problem with it with WinME. It has played very well on my machine. It does take a lot of memory if you use the resident protection. The new pre beta is another story for WinME but they are working on it. -- God put me on this Earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now, I am so far behind I will never die. |
