The mojority of comps in the US come from oems like dell, gateway, compaq, who install valid copy of Windows on their computers.

I bought Windows xp Corporate for, if I remember correctly $3 when I was in Belarus(East Europe) two summers ago. As far as I know that the only version of windows that I ever bought.

my friend can get an academic winxp (same as regular winxp i believe) for $5/copy.

Thats not what piracy is about. You shouldn't have to pay one red cent for a pirated copy as the purpose of pirating is supposed to be to spread the technology around without making money on it. If you're paying five dollars for a free ( it was free you know) copy of winxp, you're paying a guy five bucks for a cd disk! I haven't researched the profit margin there but I suspect that it's no different than Billy charging 100 dollars for something that has already paid for itself to the developer millions of times over. In my opinion you shouldn't have to pay for a pirated copy, it should be treated as shareware.
