worthless

Stock options are worthless if the stock price doesn't go up. SBC's stock hasn't moved in five years. That's why the guy is still holding on to the options and hasn't cashed them in yet. If you buy a half million worth of stock and sell it for a half million, that's not exactly an incentive to be someone's champion.

Which they may if he got his way which I think is the point of the criticism.

You really think muni broadband in out of the way townships is having any real effect on SBCs financials?

SBC apparently thinks so. At least they see the potential for unwanted competition.

I doubt that SBC would consider cities like San Francisco out of the way townships. »SBC opposes San Francisco Muni BB

I thought the whole idea of munis was to wire places that weren't being served by the telcos. I would think SF is being well served by SBC.

No, I think the guy wanting muni BB banned and him having half a mil in stocks with SBC is just a huge coincidence, we all know he's looking out for the good of the people, and that less competition = more innovation.

I thought the government was constrained against direct competition with private business?

Public schools compete against private. The USPS competes with Fedex, UPS and DHL. Private security patrols compete with police. Public transit competes with private transit. Private hospitals complete with public hospitals.

There are plenty of areas where gov't completes directly or indirectly against private sector business.

That is completely true, I have yet to see a MuniBB start up where there wasn't already an Incumbent. At least in all the cases where I've dealt with it personally. I'm sure there are Munis out there with pure intentions, but mostly they're there to drive someone else out.

MuniBB starts going where there is significant CONSTITUENT DEMAND for them to be there. More often than not it takes democratic action (voting on the bond issuance etc) to get these rolling which is why we see all of the incumbent money being spent on advertising saying like a Jedi Mind Trick "No, you don't want choice, you don't want better service..."
