I hear that a lot: "they don't compete". But it's an incorrect premise. If you're in a state with another cable provider offering 15Mbps, customers look to you and say "Why don't you offer 15Mbps?" It's not direct competition, but it's public relations competition.

They're very aware of it. Why do think Verizon offered that recent "deal"? To maintain competitive public image.

Exactly. It is the perception that someone, anyone else has a faster service that will drive Verizon marketing nuts.

If this becomes a wide spread phenomenon, Vz will play the one-up game and boost speeds even if they don't directly compete.

Competition is good!
