Some users had initially trouble setting up audio but otherwise it worked quite well.

Text chatting sucks in the OSX version as it does not support Japanese input. Some characters won't display properly. Windows version doesn't have this issue.

iChat AV 3 supports multiple video connections and AIM video chat for Windows users but you need Tiger and realistically at least a G4.

iVisit can do video chat on older machines and they also have an OS8.6-9 version. You obviously have to log in to establish the connection, but you can then log off the AIM server and still continue the video/audio chat.

I think it's the best - iVisit wasn't very good when I tried it. Choppy video, tinny sounds...

ichat on the mac side, and aim on the windows side, this combo will do both audio and video as good as you can get without both ends using ichat

Have a question...

Got some family in Tokyo. Looking to do video chat. I have a G5 iMac. I can get an iSight, could also use a Firewire camcorder I have as a source. Our connection is 3Mbs cable.

Family in Japan is PC, Windows XP. Currently they're using MSN Chat to do video chat between a couple family members in Japan and Hong Kong. Works pretty well, I guess (although I doubt they have seen iChat!). Their connections are Fiber at 40+ Mbs in Japan(seriously), 5Mbs DSL in Hong Kong.

Tried to get them to buy macs... might happen long term.

So, my question: What is the best cross-platform chat software we can use for video chat?
