Re: Mccain ready for his presidential election run

said by pnh102:

McCain campaigned just as dirty as Bush did in the 2000 primaries. He was behind a push-poll in Michigan which accused George W. Bush of being anti-Catholic. But as for alienating the religious right which make up the bulk of the Republican party, McCain did that on his own without any "help."
Alienating the religious right is no difficult task.

I had not remembered McCain's attempt at mudslinging.

(Though one could argue that his accusation of guilt by association had at least some basis--with the quote from Bob Jones himself regarding Pope Paul's death:
"Pope Paul VI, archpriest of Satan, a deceiver and an anti-Christ, has, like Judas, gone to his own place."
...Bush DID formally apologize to Catholics for speaking at such a, erm, biased university. Doesn't excuse McCain's tactics though. You know what they say about wrestling with pigs...)

Any Republican running for national office must have the votes of the Religious Right or else he/she will lose. If you look at most previous Republican victories for the presidency, you will notice the margin of victory was much higher when the candidate running campaigned from the right than from the center (Reagan in 1980 and 1984, George H. W. Bush in 1988, George W. Bush in 2004).
Again, read where I agreed in my above post. Still sad but true though. Unfortunately the religious right has firmly entrenched themselves in the GOP power structure. Then again, where else would they go?

Having weak Democratic candidates helps too. ("D.C. & Min." Mondale, "Furlough" Dukakis, and "Mr. Ketchup" Kerry respectively--int. leaving out Carter)

And I'll just stop there since I can see the original topic way on the other side of that canyon...:)
