1 edit | reply to nonone1 I am pretty sure this is not the legit one, although there is a site that is legit. It's not called optoutscreen though. Don't do it.

I call bullsh*t. I went to the websites of the credit bureaus, I see no reference to this place. and it asks for a ssn as part of opting out of someting.
Optoutprescreen.com is a joint venture between Equifax Information Services, LLC, Experian Information Solutions, Inc., Innovis Data Solutions, Inc., and TransUnion, LLC (collectively the "Consumer Credit Reporting Companies"). Opt Out's primary purpose is to accept and process requests from consumers to "Opt-Out" of pre-approved offers of credit or insurance. If you have previously completed a request to Opt-Out and would like to Opt-In, you may also complete your request on this website. when you get these "pre-approved" apps, they dont know your ssn, you're not really even preapproved (I learned about this the hard way) -- babbling | mvm |

| Well according to the BBB of Spokane Washington and a lot of other Web sites, it is a valid org sponsored by the Credit companies you pointed out. Calling them certainly should confirm that.

A quick look at the West Corporation site indicates it is a legitimate business, probably contracted with the credit reporting agencies to process some of the opt-out requests. Note that West Corporation has a close relationship with the direct marketing industry. It seems to me that if you use this program to opt out of receiving certain types of junk mail, you are also helping these folks by providing a shiny new confirmed update for their marketing database, and that might just target you for future marketing outside of the scope of this opt-out program. Simply shredding the pre-approved credit and insurance offers might be preferable to officially "opting-out" ... |

C'mon, [s]he was right to question if the site is legit before entering personal information. The site does look suspect - it has no links to the credit bureau web sites, logos at the top do not have transparent background, and the design is kinda amateurish. |

Come on people , just for once back it up with facts. You must be referring to me. I just know it. BTW just because something is bigger than you (the credit bureaus) doesn't mean you have to bend over & spread'em just because they say so. Not lining up like sheep for slaughter is not being fearful & paranoid. It's the opposite. Why do you accept such one sided policies such as having to "Opt-Out" for which you never "Opted-In"? That to me is "fearful & paranoid" behavior, if you want my opinion. The site is NOT legitimate because the reason for it's very existence is not legitimate. |

Even if - and especially if - this website is legitimate, such a practice is reprehensible, if not outright illegal! Yes, but bottom line it is done. Try getting a credit card, loan, anything financial without giving your social security number....it's not gonna happen.
By law you don't have to give your SS number other then to the federal government and your employer for tax purposes, but thats it...you don't HAVE to give it to them. They are still allowed to ask, and they are still allowed to deny you for not giving it.
So no it's not illegal of them to ask for such information. Also the fact that the site is run by the credit agencies means that even if you didn't give it to them they could easily obtain it from your first name last name and address. -- Forum Posts:6500 |

ZOverLordPremium join:2003-10-20 Minneapolis, MN 4 edits | reply to nonone1 I agree with Blackbird. Yes, The site may be credible BUT..why do they need so much information. They most likely WILL help with the issues they say they will, however I am more than positive create other problems for you.
Example:
I had a Girlfriend once ("Yes, it's possible, lol") who always would Logon my email accounts to see who was sending me email ("I am also SURE I am not alone on this one").
Suddenly, one day she sees ONE email from a Porno site, she is so filled with anger she clicks on the "Do not send me any more email from this site" LINK.
In less than one week, I have over 50-100 emails every day from Porno sites based in countries that even Maps have not listed as of yet.
Lesson: When you OPT-OUT of something, NEVER think that does anything else but 2 things:
1. Proves your heart is still beating, which increases the value even more of your personal data.
2. Will cause the Company/Site to sell your info to others for an even higher price and more frequently than others.
There is NO reason for a company that CLAIMS they are trying to protect you to ask for yet additional information.
There are HOLES in every privacy statement "Which This Site does not even HAVE!".
These companies can and will use your information for future purposes, and sell it to others as well.
Come On Folks, George Carlin, could do a whole show on this site name, lol
"Lets See...I want to OPT-OUT of something, I am sure that's what I want to OPT-OUT....Wait...Hmmm, did they change the law...I need a Pre-Screening before I can OPT-OUT. OMG....What if I fail the pre-Screen, Will I still be OPT-OUTTED? After all the site name is OptOutPreScreen.com Will I now receive email from companies around the world saying, Dear Mr. Carlin, we are sorry to hear of your recent failing of your Pre-Screening to OPT-OUT, however our company has an easier test for people of your intelect.."
