Linksys BEFSX41 Router + Speedstream 5200 Modem?

Hey guys, my first post here and I have to admit I'm a total Networking/IP rookie.

I very recently bought a BEFSX41 Wired Router to split my connection between my two PCs and to setup a small LAN to transfer my work back and forth but I'm having some issues with the internet connection. It basically just seems to randomly work and then stall. The connection doesn't totally drop. For example, if I was streaming some music and the connection dropped, the music would keep going but I could not use my internet connection. So the connection just seems to hang. I looked through the FAQ a bit bu couldn't find anything as the problem only occurs when going through the router and not directly to the modem.

I basically have to reset both my router and modem to get my connection back and most of the time, it takes 20mins if not more for 10mins or so activity time until the next stall. It's just up and down alot.

Now I work for Bell (not for Sympatico by the way) and got a friend to do a Lantern test and he says my connection is very stable which leads me to believe that the problem lies with the Router's or the on-board settings of the Modem. I was wondering if anyone has been having similar issues and knows of a fix?

I updated my router's firmware to the latest version. Thank you for ANY help, and be sure to let me know if you need any more information. I'll set notifications to email so I'll know immediately when someone replies. Have a good one.

Make sure that the router is controlling the PPPoE connection to Sympatico (username and password entered into the router's setup interface).

Also make sure that your router's MTU is set to 1492. If it already is or if 1492 doesn't work, try setting the MTU to 1452.

Re: Linksys BEFSX41 Router + Speedstream 5200 Mode

HiVolt had same issue with his 6300 where he was unable to make new connections, all the previous connections continued to run such as IRC etc but his modem was doing (S)NAT so he fixed the problem by removing it from the equation. Is your router making PPPoE connection or the modem?

By PPoE, do you mean controlled by a Bridged connection instead of letting the router do it? (from what I read so tell me if it doesn't make sense)

Simply put, PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet) is the type of "conversation" that your computer has with the Sympatico servers to connect to the Internet. A bridged connection simply allows the conversation to flow through after making it fit to be transmitted over a regular phone line by changing the digital information to analogue.

There are 3 things that can control the PPPoE connection in your setup:
1) Your computer using some software like Sympatico Access Manager, RASPPPoE or the Windows XP Connection Manager.
2) Your Router (look up PPPoE and how to set your username and password in the instructions).
3) Your Modem where the setup interface allows you to enter your username (b1xxxxxx) and password. If you don't do this, the modem operates in bridge mode an needs something else to manage the PPPoE connection.

The best choice is to have your router manage the internet connection (that, among other things, is what the router is made for).

Ok, I've assigned my Router my Sympatico username and password combination and selected PPoE but no changes yet. Should I remove my user ID and password from my Modem or should I leave those in?

I also set the NAT to 1452. Nada,

Re: Linksys BEFSX41 Router + Speedstream 5200 Modem?

additionally make sure no other connections in the My Network Places>Properties under the lan or high speed internet.Should only be your particular adaptor say for example: local area connection via rhine fast ethernet connected. Of course the wizard will be below.
And interent properties>connections nothing should be in the "window"
Sometimes I have seen people with several attempted connection jobs languishing away in\and or either place.

To recap what I did so far:

1. Set my router to use PPPoE and put in my Sympatico log-in information.
2. Should I remove my Login info from my modem's configuration page and let the router handle it? (192.169.2.1)
3. Set MTU to 1492 then to 1452.
4. Verified that only my LAN/router-based connection was present in my Network Connections folder.

No changes yet. Still have no/very little internet connectivity. LAN works great though.

Yes.

Just checked my modem and I can't actually remove my user ID and password. If I try to just blank them, it gives me an "Invalid user ID entered" kind of message.

I believe that you have to set the modem to bridge mode (»Bell Canada Internet FAQ »Bridge mode or Router mode with the 5200 E242?) from the setup screen.

Another way would be to reset the 5200 modem and do not enter anything into it. Don't even open the 5200 modem's interface in a browser at all. Then use only the Linksys Router to create the PPPoE connection through the 5200 modem while left in it's unconfigured state.

That is the best way, IMHO.

Doc,

Good point. I was under the impression that the newer 5200s were shipped from Sympatico defaulting to Router mode thereby implying that it's a Sympatico firmware mod. However, you could very well be right - I've not had the need to try it out. Either way it's really easy to check:

1) Try the reset method as mentioned by Doctor Olds.
2) Failing that, try the FAQ method.

Doc D

If my information has already been entered in the modem, is there a way to remove though? Or should I be fine setting it in Bridge? (at work so I can't check apart from remote access but I would lose my connection)

That is exactly what a reset does.

Resetting the modem and setting the router to PPPoE seems to have done the trick for now. Thanks for all your help, guys. Very appreciated! I'll post back if it starts getting screwy again.

Hmm, my connection started dropping again yesterday and I didn't do any changes. Guess I was just on a lucky streak there.
