Re: [Poll] Antivirus Poll 2005

said by Sikki:

I currently use BitDefender 8 standard. It replaced KAV when KAV didn't find a virus that slowed the computer to a crawl. I switched to BitDefender which found the virus and have had no problems since. I don't recall the virus that was found but after the switch the speed is back to where it was a long time ago.
As an update on BitDefender...I got the free upgrade to version 9 and it was Hell. Everytime I had the AV update it would simply shut itself down and not restart. I would wait 5 minutes or more and still nothing. I contacted tech support and after one week of deleting this and run this test I finally decided it wasn't worth it. I am now looking for an AV that will update and still run. Sad too as I really like BitDefender.

I'd go for NOD32. Small incremental daily updates (just a few kB), small system footprint, fastest scanning speed, best proactive detection of new threats provided by the ThreatSense Early Warning System. Just give it a whirl, install the trial version and I'm sure you'll like it.

I'd wait for KIS 2006 which will be released in January. It has a process guard and web defense and updates hourly.

I don't really want to wait for a few months. I'm on my laptop which has Kav on it until the end of the month. I was told by a friend about Winantivirus 2006 but someone on here told me it is adware I think it was. I'll find something this weekend and then just make a decision.

When this poll first came out in July I was trialing different av's and at that time I was using avg plus the firewall.
After using Mcafee for a year and trialing most of the others the av I purchased is Kav. Anti virus 5.0.390 and anti hacker 1.8.180 both of which were included in their suite. The best to my liking and runs great on my system.

You might consider getting the KIS 2006 beta. The beta is open to everyone. I have been too preoccupied with a horrendous problem with Dell (Dell Hell) and haven't downloaded the latest beta. Each beta is an improvement over the earlier and we are getting close enough to the target date for the Gold release (Jan 6 2006 I think it is) that many of the bad bugs are gone. You can easily disable temporarily/permanently one of the modules if it gives you problems. Or suspend it briefly. It has a neat way that you can tell it exactly how long to suspend before it starts up again. I like that. Last night, I had to exit KIS to get the Microsoft Eula at Windiz (Windows Update using Firefox) to show up. But that was simple. I got the Eula, said OK to it and then started KIS again.

There is a very active beta board for discussing problems. You can download the beta from the KAV board. I would suggest KAV 2006 beta. Not many bugs there. The bugs are mostly in KIS.

I currently use Kaspersky Personal, it hasn't failed me yet. It seems to be a solid and robust program that has served my needs well. It has caught many things that other programs have missed, and extended definitions make it even more useful. I feel well protected when using it.

On the corporate products, version upgrades are, IIRC, free of charge if you're within your licence period. However, I don't know what rules Kaspersky use for the home user products.

If you have more than two machines and are looking for AntiVirus, Kaspersky AntiVirus for Windows Workstations may make sense; you can buy just the number of seats you need. I've got three seats for my three machines, and am happy.

I don't bother with firewalls on my machines (apart from using the XP SP2 firewall on my laptop) - I use my ZyWALL 35 to control incoming and outgoing traffic.
