Voted a while ago - now I'll add my 2 cents. I am presently using Avast and am very impressed at what is offered in the free version. The same engine as the Pro version, just a few "bells and whistles" missing. Updates are pretty much daily and there is no server restriction/slow down for the free people. In addition to resident protection there is also protection for Exchange/Outlook, Email scanning, P2P, IM and Webshield. One can also have only the protection needed, not installing or disabling any services that are not. The support at the Avast site is excellent. Bit Defender Free makes an excellent back up scanner and I also have F-Prot for DOS for any emergency.

I have installed Avast free on my Mom and Sister's computers. I have installed Antivir free on my girlfriend's computer. On another computer I have bitdefender free with nothing resident. And on this computer I have 30 trial of Nod32 (going to trial KAV next).

So my score card:
Avast 2
AntiVir 1
Bitdefender 1
Nod32 1

I've been trying lots of AV's lately, but I just today renewed my NOD32 license. I can't find anything that I like better or runs better on my computer.

I use NAV and Bit Defender. I also use BOClean.

NOD32 user here. Nice and light on a pc, advanced heuristics are simply the best out there imo.

Kaspersky Antivirus Pro 5.0 ( KAV ) with the extended databases.

"kaspersky 4.5 failed, allowed infection, and couldnt clean it"

Say - for those of you who migrated from SAV 9 to 10 - did you see a difference? Hows the SAV spyware protection treating you?

I'm evaluating nod32 after not being able to get the current KAV to update the defintions on my windows 2000 box.

I think what was meant - was - shouldn't pricing not be the first concern in regards to your antivirus choice? Shouldn't protection level and ease of use be the things that should stand out before price? I agree that price is a factor for many of us. The fact that Kaspersky has come down in price has helped it to further gain market share. So pricing does play a role in things. I'm just not sure it should be the most important factor when making a security product choice.

I agree with you that the price should not be the most important factor. I always evaluate free products that I use. And in this particular case AVG Free in my opinion is excellent product, I never had virus come through so I see no reason why to not use it.
On a side note: I used to use NAV as well, but found AVG much faster and much less "system intrusive".

I'd like to speak up for the 3% (at time of this post) who answered: none!

This seems to go against a prevailing perception that it's imperative.

Well, the truth is you really don't need it if you're knowledgable and careful; maintain a secure configuration; are the sole user of the Windows machine; and avoid Microsoft products for web and email, or anything network-enabled.

If any of those things does not hold true, you definitely need a-v. For example, I would install a-v if this were going to be a multi-user system. Instead, friends and family get accounts on the Linux box where they can't do any harm.

I use KAV Personal 5.0.327. for me its the best antivirus.

first of all, it doesn't consume much of your hardisk space. it only uses 10.2MB of hardisk space. unlike avast!4.6, it consumes much of space approximately 30.7MB of hardisk space.

second, KAV shows their virus database so that users will know how many viruses can their antivirus detect in the wild. check their site @ »www.kaspersky.com/avupdates

third, KAV is very powerful when going to any underground sites full of wild viruses such as trojans, worms and network attacks. sometimes, it can also detect an antispyware with trojans embedded on it.

overall, i love KAV for its little space consumed in my hardisk. "small, but powerful!!!" that's what a powerful software is.

I currently have six systems up and running in my lab. I am in the process of switching from Norton to Kaspersky on my workstations. I have Kaspersky on my main system, Nod32 on my servers (ESET is the only anti-virus vendor of which I'm aware, that does not require expensive licensing for servers; a life saver for those of use who don't use our Servers for business purposes). On my other 3 workstations I will be switching to Kaspersky later this year. I don't know if it's better, but it's certainly a change.

I am relatively pleased with NOD32, although it's sometimes hard to know, just how effective an Anti-virus product is. If my computers never get a virus, it's hard to ascertain the reason, i.e. is it because my Anti-virus product does such a great job, or is it because I was fortunate enough not to be attacked? On the other hand, if I get a virus, is it because something is mis-configured, or is it because the anti-virus product I am using failed?
