BS !! SBC hasn't shipped a 5100 anything in the Ameritech region in the past 6 months. I had the 5100a which was working just fine. But I had read here and there that I shouldn't expect it to last "forever." I renewed and ordered the 4100. Interesting; but, I suppose if they still have them in stock. The SS5100 has been out of production for a long while; replaced by the SS5100B. The SS5100B is also out of production, though. The SS4100 is the current entry level modem that SBC is shipping.

I just did an install for a friend in RLB and they were shipped the 4100...

also, since neither of the 5100's or the 4100 has wireless capabilities, how could you possibly think you could determine what type of modem is being used based on WiFi and Netstumbler???

Apparently, that is what the SS4100 provides when it is assigning 192.168.1.64.

Open your Cayman (Only if you want to as it's only a suggestion, ok? ) so you can identify what DSL Chipset it is running unless you already know.

Plus, you should know that the Maximum Attainable Sync Rate is only an estimate. The higher the actual Downstream Sync Rates is increased the lower the SNR Downstream will drop and it sometimes will end up with D/S SNR below the minimum specification to hold sync reliably. Trade offs everywhere.

I do know about these Efficient brand units and which ones have/don't have the "full" ATU-C Physical Layer Info data available:

I do not know about other brands, sorry. I just know that the Virata Helium and the Alcatel Dynamite Chipsets have what you want. They are EOL though.

Both of these modems are entry level.

This kind of information has recently been invaluable to me, when trying to see which phone jack in the house works best with DSL. The NID works best of all, of course, but my partner would object to me cutting off all of the phones in the house :)

The very next release Model 5667 (SecureRoute version) fixed the broken "trace route" (aka tracert) issue that the 5660 had in PPPoE Mode only. Efficient called it a 5660 feature, not a bug, BTW.

The 5660 and 5100b interfaces do not look similar at all in my humble opinion based on my personal ownership of both units. The 5660 and 5667 "Secure Route" units were similar, but after those units went EOL the GUI dramatically changed as Efficient introduced the new 5x Series.. (5100, 5200, etc).

The GUI on the 5660, 5100, 5100a, 5200, 6300 all use frames and they basicly look the same to me. The 5100b and 4100 are odd with 1 frame.

I believe somewhere inside the 5100b and 4100 modem the GUI with the frames is hidden.

Being this is an SBC Forum I think we are really more interested in the SBC shipping/branded/crippled 4100. Right now it seems the GUI is very similar to the SBC supplied 5100(b).

General Help

This DSL modem is capable of operating in a variety of modes (PPP is on the modem, PPP is on the computer, Bridged Mode). The default mode is for the DSL modem to run PPP. The modem can run extensive diagnostics on your DSL service. The Advanced options are for technical support and should only be used by qualified personnel.
