usenet problem

Hi.
I can connect to snappy's news server via Outlook Express (ugh), but when I use Xnews, it asks for a password. This failure has produced both 502 (authentication failure) & 501 (bad authentication) messages. According to tech support, the server doesn't require a password (bad idea).
I'm wondering if this an Xnews bug.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can be done, besides trying a different news client?

The news feed is from Giganews. If you are a dsl subscriber, then you should be able to access it from SnappyDSL's Network only...no requirements to login or authenticate.
If you are a SnappyDSL's dial-up subscriber, then you need to contact us (email me or IM me) and we will need to setup an account for you, and you will need to authenticate.

Faisal,
Thanks for the reply. I've resolved the Xnews issue.
The server has at least as many groups and greater retention than a premium pay server I had an account with, yet there's one problem: why is the newsfeed sooooo sloooooow? I download at around 36K and it isn't a steady 36K either. It sputters as if it's being turned on and off.
Does snappy throttle it or otherwise play with the feed?

I am gald that your news access is working.

There is a serious challange with news service. If an ISP decides to do it inhouse the amount of resouces required to maintain it are tremedious.

If an ISP decides to 'out-source' it then it has to choose on how to manage / control it.
Choices available are:
Restrict the newsgroups.
Restrict by attachment size
Restrict by 'download limit'
Restrict by 'download speed'
Restrict by 'number of concurrent connection'.

Our news feed service is outsourced to Giganews, the only restrictions are the last two (download speed and the number of concurrent connections'.

Sorry for the inconvienience, these were choosen becuase there were considered to be the least problematic compromise.
