FIOS I know it'll be odd for an outsider like me to pipe up, but I'd say that a service like FIOS needs to know that its retention rates will be high in order to sustain such rapid growth. Having worked ISP support before (not for Verizon), I can tell you that there are customers who routinely subscribe to more services than they can afford, or who will gladly cancel and resubscribe to services to exploit the "3 months at half-price!" deals. A wealthy suburb will have people for whom $50 a month is perfectly reasonable - they may even subscribe to the $200-per-month plan and not bat an eye. That's money in the bank for Verizon.
I don't doubt that Verizon will expand into more middle-of-the-road areas over time, but probably only when economies of scale work in their favour. |
