Firmware fun with aztech DSL-600EU/EW/RE

For those who want to get some more juice from their aztech adsl modem (model DSL-600EU/EW/ER) I suggest you download a unreleased firmware from ftp.aztech.com/sgp/Shiro/600_EU_EW

NSP3.6.OC GA AZTECH GENERIC WEB GUI.zip (size 38.6MB)

Inside this file you find firmware 66.2.1.001 for model DSL-600EW and DSL600EU. For model DSL-600ER firmware is 63.2.1-001
The file has also contains Pc_App v2.3 a Texas Instruments firmware application (for MS WINDOWS) to flash the new firmware ( READ CAREFULLY THE INSTRUCTIONS)

ftp.aztech.sgp/adsl/600ew/ contains a newer version 66.2.1.012 and a older version of pc_app ( version 1.0)
with some bug fixes, but only for model dsl-600ew.

Oke this is what I did.

1) followed the instructions ( install pc-app, static ip, strait cable etc)
2) connected a strait cable from the pc to E1 on the dsl600EW
3) flashed it, turned router off/on and reset it with the web-interface.
4) configure it and have fun with a turbo charged dsl-600

You will get QoS with traffic shaping, vlan, snmp, isolation lan & wifi. But still no AES WPA1/WPA2, just wep and TKIP. Webinterface is new and better.
Router can reboot independant from adsl.
SSH with cert on ssh port 22 ( use putty.exe)
CLI interface, but no password, but can drop to shell as root. ( user root, password admin)
OS is still the same; linux from montavista, but firewall seems to be compiled in the kernel.
Some cli tools added, just check it out.

NEW WEB user/password = admin admin

A word of caution to prevent panic.
You can easily kill the dsl-600 with this PC_APP application. Do understand what you are doing. Follow the instructions.
But things can always go wrong and luckily the PC_APP can also revive the dsl-600. PC_APP communicates with the adam2 bootloader of the ar7wrd/ar7rd mainboard. The bootloader ADAM2 is always functional , even after a bad flash.
I killed the router on first try. Seems the PC_APP wants your network card at 100mbs full duplex. I had it at 10mbs half duplex. PC_APP crashed and failed to complete the flash. After that I reset ( & turn off/on) the router but it was death with a beautifull red power led, which surely will make your heart beat faster.
But after putting the network card at 100mbs full duplex PC_APP completed all 3 parts of the flash and I had once again a functional dsl-600EW. Surely beats my bricked Linksys WRT54G, which needed surgery (JTAG socket and cable) to get back to live.

Well have fun.

ps I think the PC_APP can be used with any ar7wrd/ar7rd board, so try it and we will see.

FYI,

I'm using Aztech DSL 600EU, I'm comfortable with my firmware, I don't really want to risk it by changing the firmware.

It can give extra boost? I don't think so, only Streamyx side can give it.

IMHO,

Aztech users.

After some testing it seems firmware 66.2.1.001 for the dsl-600ew has a few bugs in the vlan section. Firmware 66.2.1.012 remedies this.

A manual for this firmware can be found at

This is for the NB5PLUS4W from netcomm, but uses the same firmware base with a little cosmetic change. The NB5PLUS4W is a ar7wrd device too.

According to www.wi-fi.org Texas Instruments received wpa2 certification for its ar7w ap-dk ( developers kit) on 21 June 2005. So maybe wpa2 is coming after all.

Re: Firmware fun with aztech DSL-600EU/EW/RE

Hi all, thanks to MRYELLOW for the valuable info, im now using new GUI for my DSL600EW after flashing the firmware to 66.2.3. It's really cool! But I screwed up my modem in the first attempt but thanks to ANON for the info about the TI Remote Application (firmware loader).

When I purchased my DSL600EW it came with the factory firmware 43.53.1 installed. It took my modem 20~30 minutes to sync the DSL line and I had to switch on and off many many times in order to get DSL link synced. After upgrading the fimware to ver 66.2.3, it took less than 2 minutes to syn DSL link.

But, I noticed when using ver 43.53.1 the connection was 512/128 and using ver 66.2.3 it is 509/124 or so, I'm not sure why.

Btw, I'd like to use WinXP broadband dialer. I don't configure the PPPoE dialer in the modem but instead I configured the modem as Bridge. I managed to get connected to the net using the broadband dialer from my PC but I cannot browse and I couldn't even ping any websites on the net. Anyone can share a work around will be really appreciated.
