First I want you to go to the router Password page and reset the Router to default settings. Then push the reset button in for 30 seconds. After this go back and set router defaults again. You have now just performed a hard reset(better known as the long reset). No go set your router back up to whatever setting you desire.

Recommendations:
Set the router IP to something different than 192.168.1.1. 192.168.xxx.xxx. Anything will work. Even 192.168.1.2. But I would change it to a higher number. After you change it you will have to perform a DHCP release/renew on the computer that is hooked to it. Change the default password to something besides "admin".

Under Advanced Filters set Block WAN Request to Enable. This will prevent your router from responding to Pings. I have Multicast Pass through to Enable. PPTP and IPSec to Disable. Remote Management and Upgrade to Disable. MTU set to default which is disable but I am on Cable. DSL might require something here. Filter Internet NAT Redirection and Filter(IDENT) port 113 to Enable. You might have to experiment with these last two.

As far as UPnP, many call this a security bug. You might try and setting this one and see if it makes a difference.

One thing to remember, this router will not handle too many connections like if being used to download through a P2P client. Not sure is this is what is happening to you or not. It doesn't sound like it based on what you said you were doing at the time it drops the connection.

One thing to look for is if you can monitor the router when and if the event occurs? Do you see the Router Red DIAG lite illuminated? Well, I am having some problems since I upgraded the firmware and am hoping someone can help me. The router hiccups or buffers(I guess you could call it that).

For example:In the chat room (on my desktop computer plugged into the router), it now freezes and then dumps all the buffered text 15-20 seconds later, this happens about every 20-25 minutes or so. When it does that, on my laptop (that is plugged in the second router port), it cuts off my internet radio stream (this also happens about every 20-25 minutes, concurrent with the chat buffer). It never did these things before. Yes, I did test the computers by plugging them directly into the modem. The chat does not hiccup and stream does not cut off when plugged directly into the cable modem.

Is there a setting in the config of BEFSR41 that could fix this? I looked all through 192.168.1.1 config, and saw no "buffer" etc setting. It is maddening, and I don't want to buy a new router, just because the new firmware stinks. By the way, I have version 1.46.02. I see in the config that UPnP is new, does that have something to do with it? I have no idea...

Exactly!! Correct on all counts. The hardware change between the V1 & V2 is the internal power supply.

I've had a V1, V2, and V3.1
V2 - bought this 1st, it died mysteriously, was replaced. Internal power supply was okay. Standard 9VAC @ 1A power "brick".
V1 - found it in the trash, fixed blown power supply (internal fuse was blown). One port is dead. Power supply has a vented case and is a proprietary power supply, 5VDC @ 3A. Operates the same as the V2, except this one is not dead.
V3.1 - still in box, same power brick as V2. Just 6 LEDs, 1-power. 4-ports, 1-Internet. There is no diagnosic LED.

Also, V1 & V2 WAN is 10mbps, V3 WAN is 100mbps.

It is on the bottom on a sticker(ver 2). I got the firmware upgraded to most recent ver 2 firmware (146.2, I believe). Only problem I have now is that when I listen to online internet radio, it cuts off every 5-6 min or so, nothing else seems to....wonder why?

I've never seen the firmware upload stop at 0%.

Do you have some sort of firewall and/or anti-virus on your computer? If so, try disabling it.
