AOL as much as I hate the VPN, which used to run straight off windows VPN, was smart to open it to a TCP/IP protocol-no more technical problems for the complicated connection which was easier done through their dial access numbers than the dsl they provided with specialized modems. Problem is this QoS is not optional and if AOL needs the bandwidth to communicate and say you're running P2P full throttle, it may slow you down even if AOL is not logged in. But yes, AOL has finally opened any brand of modem/router to work and has since the $14.99 BYOA package came out, which was way before RR offered it for free.

Mele20 : I think we are having some miscommunication and it is my fault I think.

I tried AOL 9.0 after not having AOL since Sept 2001. I tried AOL 9 because of this deal with it being free with RR and I wanted the AOL radio which is really good. I couldn't get the radio to work. I didn't surf with AOL browser or do anything other than try to get the radio to work. I couldn't so I uninstalled it. I had it about 30 minutes. It uninstalled very cleanly. Perhaps though that was because I didn't do anything except try to get the radio to work.
I also had no problems cleanly uninstalling 8.0 (I think was the version that came on this Dell when I bought in Nov 2003). I did not run AOL at all back then. I just uninstalled it without ever opening it. So, I am thinking that maybe I had a clean uninstall (a little left over that RegClean got rid but nothing like all these entries you report or the article you referred me to) because I didn't even open 8.0 at all before uninstalling and 9.0 all I did was click on the radio and when it wouldn't work, I uninstalled it. Maybe if I had USED AOL some, and then uninstalled it, I would have had a lot of left over registry entries. I know that was not the case back when I had it years ago. It uninstalled cleanly then (except for when I had to reformat) with some left over stuff but RegClean got that, but maybe it does not these days if you have used it for a while first.

I used AIM years ago (99-2001) and it was not full of ads and other crap like it is now and it didn't install anything like Viewpoint or other spyware like it does now. I wouldn't touch it now with a ten foot pole. I thought it was Wild Tangent that AIM installs that is the spyware not Viewpoint. The Viewpoint I installed on the Ford site is pretty benign. Maybe the one with AIM is worse, but I think it is Wild Tangent that is the bad spyware not Viewpoint.

I have a sample Hosts file. But I never added anything to it so it is not functional on either computer. I used Ad/subtract from beta until the free version went paid in summer 2003 and then I switched to the Proxomitron from which Ad/subtract had licensed code. So, I have not seen ads since summer/fall 2000. I didn't need to add to the Hosts file because of those two local proxies I used to filter ads and Proxo filters much more than ads.

I don't have AOL currently. I installed 9.0 last year when I first heard about the free AOL with RR. I wanted it for the radio only. I couldn't get it to work and uninstalled it about 1/2 hour after I installed it. The only time I had AOL as my ISP was back June 99-Sept 2001. There would be no reason now to get AOL for the radio as it is available through their portal. No need to download and install AOL. The portal did not exist when I tried AOL 9.

Maybe I didn't give enough attention to the article you referred me to. It struck me as ranting and that turned me off. I really don't think AOL is that awful although I think AIM is awful now. At any rate, I wanted to make clear that I don't use AOL and haven't since Sept 2001. I simply tried 9.0 briefly last year.

Thanks for the kind words about most of my posts. I appreciate that a lot. :)

--
"If you want to do DRM on a PC then you need to treat the user as the enemy."
Death2U : It was, I'm sorry about the mistake. I gathered my data about a year ago, it wasn't as complete as these guys but did Validate the article which is old, but from a very trustworthy source. I do agree with 99% of your posts, but take it from an AOL victim that had dial up back in the day, I must disagree with the comment on this one, but you did clarify some things and most of the seperate ad windows are on AOL browser pages or messenger spam, unless they recently stopped it. Yes, all my configured pc's have that service disabled, but I always look at software I think is bugged in native windows state, eliminating any problems caused by settings that are normally fine but not for the particular software. As far as viewpoint goes, it's always been flagged as Adware by some spyware scanners and after removal, scan again it's gone. Start AOL or reboot and it is back. My pc had a HOST file but it was blank in native state with just a coptright and an example with # # so it didn't apply. It said 2001 Microsoft and that it was a sample. It can be made functional just by adding to it. The article ranted a little but give a little slack(I rant to but always give reasons) he and MNOSteele worked on a program called Cablenut for the TCP/IP stack to find settings overrided. Frustrated developers can rant some but he did give some solid data, though my port scan count was different than his. You do have your choice to stay with AOL if you would like to, but knowledge is power and we put forth our experience with AOL. If you're still content after hearing the facts, that's your choice and we must all decide the benefits/risks for ourselves in the choices we make. If you feel AOL has more benefits than the risks my statement put out and that article, then use it. We all take our own risks if we think we'll come out ahead. I am by no means here to come down on you because I feel some people give you too much flack for good posts. Take care!

Mele20 : Were you addressing me? You say reply to"Cyrick" but your wording seems directed at me.

That article at the link you gave is MORE THAN TWO YEARS OLD! It is totally outdated and appears to be mostly a rant. I had AOL for two years between July 99 and September 2001. (I got RR on June 8, 2001 but kept AOL for a while free). I got AOL orginally because GTE/Verizon which I had at first refused to allow me to upgrade IE from version 4 to 5. So, I tried AOL and they didn't mind that I had just upgraded IE nor did they care that I used that stand alone IE while connected to AOL instead of their IE when I surfed. I never had slow downs (it was slow enough being on dialup), I didn't see ads after I got Ad/subtract beta but that was because I minimized AOL after signon and surfed with MY IE not theirs. I just used AOL to connect to the internet.

As for tons of entries in the registry after uninstalling, I didn't have that even with AOL 9 which I had briefly. Plus, this computer came with AOL 8 and I uninstalled it. I ran RegCleaner both times and there were a few entries left but not much. Back when I had AOL for two years, I must have installed and uninstalled a zillion betas. One did force me to reformat but the others I just uninstalled. I still use that computer some and it doesn't have tons of AOL crap in the registry. I think your uninstallation went poorly and that is why you had all that stuff in the registry still.

As for security software locking my Hosts file, I don't have a Hosts file. That has to be created you know. I never needed one so I never created one. I use the Proxomitron so I have no need of a Hosts file.

As for ViewPointMedia, I installed that a long time ago because I wanted to get inside some Fords and I needed the player to do that. I didn't get it from AOL as I didn't have AOL at the time. I do know they install it with AIM. My ViewPointMedia has been very quiet. It never activates unless I want to get in another Ford or go to some other retailer site that uses it to show me the product they sell. If it was doing anything, I'd uninstall it ...but it is quite well behaved...nothing like that horrible QuickTime that I made the stupid mistake of installing again when I got my new Nikon digital camera so I could see the movies I make. I had to uninstall it right away and that does leave crap on your computer and you have to run a registry cleaner to get that garbage off.
--
"If you want to do DRM on a PC then you need to treat the user as the enemy."
Death2U : Check with RegSeeker and SmartPC once you uninstall AOL, thousands of entries(no exxageration) associated with AOL. This program doesn't uninstall clean and you'll notice if you used their VPN at all that your MTU will keep resetting to 1400. Maybe your hosts file was locked, some of the better security software does that for you. As does my Zonealarm Pro. But the entries you find in those products only show errors that are associated with something it can find and while they are excellent, open the root of your registry, so many are obviously AOL because they have the program name in the entries. I did say a clean pc, when I suspect bad software, I always standalone install it to see if it was the issue. And noone can deny with all the firewall whacks you get from AOL, that they aren't constantly trying to connect to your pc when AOL is shut down. You mention ad blockers and all this, ever think maybe it was blocking the ads through adware: Viewpoint Media Player that AOL secretly installs? I just used it to connect to the internet and then I minimized it and used my stand alone IE or Netscape to browse. I didn't like AOL email so I used my Hotmail and MyReal box accounts in OE instead. I did like AOL boards and I beta tested AOL versions 5, 6, 7 which was fun but terribly buggy verisions 6 and 7 especially as AOL asked me to do some alpha testing ...that was a mistake, but that was my fault. I beta tested a whole bunch of very cool stuff for AOL such as AOL by phone, DragonNaturally for AOL, etc. Through all the testing I did for them, I never got rid of AOL 4.0. That was the version I liked and used. I never did browse using the AOL browser. I never saw ads either as I had Ad/subtract back then. I used AOL for two years before RR came to my town because it was the best dial up I could get. I tried other dial up including the "fastest" ISP in the state and could never get above 22kbps. With AOL and my lousy phone line, I at least got 31.2 kbps all the time and never got kicked off either.

Sounds to me that you didn't get all thost Hosts entries from AOL and all the other things you accuse AOL of seem far fetched. When I tried AOL 9.0 through that RR download link, I couldn't get the radio to work and the portal wasn't open back then. I just uninstalled AOL and I didn't need to reformat. I have only reformatted once and that was because of AOL 6.0 beta that really wrecked winsock but that was a beta version not a gold version. AOL comes installed on most new OEM computers. It came installed on this current computer I got two years ago and I just uninstalled it. No problems.
Mele20 : It sounds like the bundling was incorrect. I have had no problems with "extra" billing from AOL. A lot of tier 3 techs had no idea when this was first launched how to set it up correctly. I was lucky. I got a tier 3 tech when I called Oceanic who knew exactly how to set it up. She paid attention when AOL was in Hawaii explaining it all on the day before it went live.

EDIT: if it was set up properly you should not have needed to call AOL. You are REQUIRED though to download AOL from Time Warner site SPECIFIC download link. You cannot use the AOL install that comes on a new computer, etc. It must be the specific install even though it is not any different than any other AOL install but it is that it comes from TW site which thus tells TW that you are a RR customer getting AOL free through RR. Done this way, no need to call AOL. That is how it was explained to me by the tier 3 tech.l
--
"If you want to do DRM on a PC then you need to treat the user as the enemy."
Mele20 : RR National Help Desk pointed out last night that I could just use AOL mail without needing to install AOL. Use the web mail. That sounds good. So, I just tried it. I had to login with the original screen name TW gave me which is my initials followed by 12 numbers and the password is just a generic one they gave me.

I never changed the screen name or password because when I couldn't get the radio to work I just decided to uninstall AOL. Now, if web mail would work, I'd like to have that but there isn't any way to change the screen name or password unless I reinstall AOL. :( Plus, mail doesn't work. I did this on Firefox. I got three tabs opened and nothing works when I click on it. I guess AOL webmail only works on IE. I wouldn't use it if I have to use IE.

Well, I tried it on IE. A real mess on IE. I went back to Fx and went to »www.aol.com/ and I was signed in already so the AOL webmail site really did have me signed in but all I saw was that blank page and on IE...it hung and couldn't even get to the page. IE also could not get to aol.com portal.

That is going to be a nice site when it gets out of beta. I tried to watch a video there and couldn't get beyond the page where you put the type of connection you have. When this portal works properly having AOL software on your computer won't be necessary. :) The Radio will be available even but I think only on IE. I tried sending a bug report and couldn't. :( Since I don't know exactly how I got signed onto the portal because all I signed onto was the webmail site, I don't know how to sign off. AOL made me give them 15 cookies for the portal page alone. :(
--
Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. I don't seem to have much problem with it even on older computers as long as they have a somewhat clean installation of Windows. That's spyware in my book. So, I went to uninstall it and had a horrible time. I could not boot my computer after the uninstall, which froze at first, and wouldn't uninstall. Then just getting my computer to work correctly again was awful. I haven't run a registry cleaner yet. My screen resolution is 1280x1024 but for some reason AOL thought it was 640x400 or something like that.

Maybe I will try it on a virtual PC as I can just not save the changes when I shut down VPC if it screws up.
--
Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. I know she said that if I already had AOL via Bring Your Own or AOL Broadband that I could keep my screen names when switching to Road Runner with AOL.

The RR AOL is no different that regular AOL 9.0 software. The only thing makes it different is that you download it from a Time Warner website link mentioned earlier in this thread. You need that version because it links your RR account to AOL. If you ever leave Road Runner, you must also call AOL and cancel the AOL account even though you get AOL free through RR. If you don't do that, you will get billed by AOL for dialup.

If your TW franchise doesn't know what you are talking about when you call and ask about this it is because this is new and not all franchises have techs trained to help customers get this. They will train the techs but you may have to wait until your franchise starts advertising this in the local news media before you can get it. Here in Hawaii, it has not been locally advertised and is not officially available yet. But I was lucky. I got a tier 3 tech on the phone who knew about it and was able to set me up.

Eventually all AOL broadband customers will be moved to Road Runner and all Road Runner customers who have Bring Your Own ISP will also be moved to Road Runner plus AOL free. You can just wait for an email or letter from Time Warner or you can call and make it happen faster assuming you get a tech who knows how to set you up now.
--
Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood. I don't know if the numbers are from my RR account or not as that information is not on my monthly bill. The password is TWC plus my zipcode.

Something I didn't like right away. AOL silently installs an AOL toolbar on your standalone IE!! That ticked me off. You can uninstall it (which I did right away) but I don't think that should be installed on my standalone IE without asking me first. I had to reboot the computer after uninstalling it also so that the files it took away could be put back. This is the kind shennanigans that makes so many cringe when AOL is mentioned. It is a shame they are still pulling this stuff.

AOL also installed and put in the systray Quicktime. Here again they should have asked me. I detest Quicktime and have never had it on this box. Now I have to go uninstall it.

I wanted AOL mostly for the radio. It has all the Netscape radio stations. I can't get the radio to open and the help file is frozen. Ugh. I thought by now AOL would have cleaned up all the mess of their earlier versions. I know AOL quite well as I was a beta tester for them for versions 5, 6 and tried to beta test 7 for broadband but AOL never got it set up. I also tested a bunch of other stuff for them back then. I had 7.0 very briefly, never had 8 or 9 until now.

I also got an error message at the end of the install saying that AOL can't be run at DPI 120 and was told the text would be too large and I had to change it to standard DPI. I thought that was weird. I have a 19" flat panel digital LCD monitor at 1280x1024 resolution so I wondered how the text and icons were going to be "too large" with my 120dpi which I use because everything is too small on 96dpi. It turned out that everything looks totally normal on AOL at 120dpi so I have no idea what that was about.
--
Around 2005 a sudden spark will catalyze a Crisis mood.
Racerbob : We ordered new service yesterday that will be installed in our new home on 8/21. The salesperson asked if we wanted AOL also. I asked him if I could still get RR e mail addresses and he replied that we sure could (the usual 5 total) and that AOL was now included at no extra charge. (We are getting the $29.95 a month deal for a year) When the installer comes to our home on 8/21, he will have a user name and password with him for our AOL account also. What the heck, for no extra money, we will play around with AOL for a bit ....

If that don't work... you'll have to call them back up  .. When I signed up.. the CSR that signed me up.. mis-typed my last initial. Luckly when I called to tell them that I couldn't sign on..
