Re: Imagine if Utopia had a drug for 'CANCER'

QWEST... rrrrrr makes me angry. I wish i could pull out my voodoo doll for qwest and stab IT it the back. (it wouldn't cripple qwest through, because their network is already crippled.. I'm actually MOVING to a town with utopia just for the triple play services, and tell qwest and comcast to take their lines from my home forever! -on a side note, Mstar.net is 40 a month for 10 up/down, xmission is 45 for the same thing. (i don't think mstar is capping though, xmission usually caps dsl so maybe fiber as well??) but sign me up

Imagine if Utopia had a drug for 'CANCER'

So is this project going to be overseen by the government or was it that only tax monies were used to fund it?

If only tax dollars were used but it's being offered by independant ISP's I'd consider it a good thing. I don't agree however with the government running a network like that. It gives them far too much leeway on what they can and cannot eavesdrop on communications wise when they own it . That and I think government projects have a nasty habit of being overbudget and overhyped .

That's exactly what UTOPIA is. The government is in no way part of the project. Its a low cost, municipal infrastructure on which private businesses may offer service.

Think of an airport. Its the same situation. The airport is a municipally funded infrastructure on which privately owned and operated Airlines offer service. UTOPIA is just like that.

The home package that ISPs are offered for resale to residential customers includes 100GB of data transfer a month. That is a UTOPIA charge, and if any provider intends to stay in business, that limit that will be passed on to the consumer. We are billed by UTOPIA for overages.

That's about 1 day's transfer at full speed (UL or DL only).

Thankyou for clearing that up. It was very hard to find any information on UTOPIA's website concerning the caps.

What are the overage charges? and what sort of units do they bill in?
is there any absolute "you used too much!" they cut you off, or slow your speed level? Or can you use as much as you are willing to pay for?

This is what is called an open access model. It is still considered municipal broadband because the munis obviously funded the infrastructure with tax dollars, even though private companies are operating across the network. In UT is is against the law for the muni to compete.

from the Xmission web page, additional transfer can be purchased in 10 Gb buckets for $10.

If they don't cut off access at some point, that means that pricing for their service is between $45 to around $6000/month, depending on usage.
