My response included an example of why a Firefox download speed report is not accurate. I cobbled up a screen shot for him, showing both Mozilla 1.7.12 just a few seconds (as soon as the screen was clear for a "Print Screen" command) after the start of the download, and MS Internet Explorer about 92% through the download, when the DL speed was fairly stable. Both to the same Comcast server in San Jose. Just for those curious about the browser speed issue, and, maybe, what DSL speeds look like on that file of yours.

Seeing as the download of the Wizard shows me at 1.02 - 1.06MB/sec, and Speakeasy shows me at 9400 - 11000kbps... Yeah!

I can only see it being that fast two or three ways.

The test was done at the office and post it as if it were @home.(I've seen a few folks do that, and questions answered, actually brought out the fact they were at work).

Using one of those cache programs that stores everything recently on your hard drive and the next very test(repeat test) shows unbelievable speeds.

I ran across one of those test on a site recently. 1st time in it reported expected speeds, then the 2nd/3rd subsequent test was like, where the heck did those numbers come from?

32,927kbps, yeah.....that's easy on a file that large.

A typical Speakeasy test here shows 7100-7600 kbps down. Download of a large file from Microsoft shows real speed more like 780-800 KB down. The download from the Beaverton, OR DHCP server doesn't reflect my true speeds either.

While I was wondering if anyone had found a closer test for Seattle, as well, I don't believe this area has received the upgrades yet. I expect a better download speed from Microsoft when that does happen.

Beaverton is the dhcp (walled garden) site for the northwest
While you are getting above the old 'gold' speeds, I don't believe the upgrade has been offically applied(after some big bursts (stress testing?) a couple weeks ago, our area is now back to slightly elevated (matches the advetized speed) transfer rates.
The problem with using the install file as a download is--- now that everyone is trying it (daily, hourly every few minutes) is that servers designed to deliver a need(debateable) file to new/recommissioned users are now hit thousands of times per hour rather than 10's of*/ per hour

It just appears that way... What's really different between the browsers is that Firefox -- once you'll selected a file and noted that you want to download it -- starts to download the file in the background BEFORE you even select a destination. By the time you specify a destination, a good chunk of the file will have been downloaded to your pc in Firefox's cache. Then -- once you specify a destination, Firefox begins by transfer the ALREADY downloaded portion of the file to the destination while the actual download continues.

So - what you see in the Firefox dialog begins with the speed of transferring the file from the cache (already downlaoded) to the destination - making it appear incredibly fast for a few moments. Then, after the cache is emptied and Firefox is constrained by the actual download speed of the remainder of the file being downloaded, the transfer rate slows down to something that you would expect. However what you see has been skewed so that the average download speed appears faster.

It's easy to see this effect if you open a bandwidth utility and watch it as you go through the process of selecting and downloading a file in Firefox. You'll see the download bandwidth usage go up immediately when you select "download" for the file - even before you specify a destination on your pc.

By the way, CDN stands for "Content Distribution Network," so it makes sense that they would be located in each of the local markets, and very well connected.

Don't know if anyone caught this part of DaCarez' post. You don't have to be cross-country to hit the AT&T bottleneck.

Running a traceroute to my DHCP server (68.87.74.10, which is in Bonita Springs/Naples, about 120 miles away) shows it going to the CRAN, then a hand-off to AT&T, then back to the CRAN, then to the CDN. At the moment this doesn't look too bad. But when gar2-p360.ormfl.ip.att.net (or any AT&T node in the 12.119.x to 12.124.x range) is either punch-drunk or totally overwhelmed with traffic, latency to that node is sometimes in the range of 150ms.

So, my question is this: because the route to the testing server hops onto AT&T's network, is this really a "True Comcast Network Speed Test"?

A somewhat buggy procedure to find it:

1. ping -a your dhcp server and get the reverse DNS name:
In Central Jersey/Philly that would be:
phil2-pdhcp.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net

2. If there is a number by the first part of the address (phil2 in this case), remove it, and replace pdhcp with cdn01, cdn02, cdn03, or cdn04 (I don't know if all areas have 4 cdns; some may have more or less)

3. You should now have phil-cdn01.inflow.pa.bo.comcast.net, or whatever your local cdn is.

4. Open Internet Explorer and go to

http://yourlocalcdn/downloadable_install_wizard.exe

This is a 36MB file and should be a decent speedtest.

For those of us in my area, you can use

without following the above steps.
