router setup for primary dns address

What is the best source of finding the primary dns address for local charter ISP? This bit of trivia is needed for my router setup.

I live in West Michigan.

thanks!

How is your router connected in your network? Is it providing DHCP for your lan? In a normal modem --> router setup, the router should be getting your public IP address on the wan interface as well as the DNS server IP's for your area in order to hand them out to the lan PC's.

Connect your PC directly to your cable modem (bypassing your router since it sounds like it's not yet configured), Click Start/Run type in cmd, press enter, type ipconfig /all at the prompt and press enter. The DNS servers should be the last two items listed in the output.

If you are not yet connected to Charter's service, give them a call.

I "think" they are 24.247.15.40 and 24.247.15.39 but you could use 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.3 until you find out for sure.

Nozero and Aguen,
thanks for reply.
I have done Nozero suggestion in past. I was just wondering out loud if there was a better way to find the primary dns address. Seems like charter should publish a listing of dns addresses by location....

You're welcome and I agree to some extent, it would make a nice FAQ too! I honestly thought we had that in a FAQ but could not locate it. Perhaps they restrict that information to customers only?

The more I think about it, the more I think it's because most all providers suggest that you use "Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically".

That's the numbers I use here in Fruitport.
Have for years and haven't ever had any particular trouble.

The reason it's set to automatically obtain through dhcp and not openly posted is to keep people using the most appropriate servers for their local areas.

So then a FAQ stating the following would be appropriate?

Set your TCP/IP configuration to "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" unless advised to otherwise by Charter Tech Support.

@dhcp.wspn.ga.charter

As a recent Charter subscriber I am fairly pleased.

BUT, my web surfing was sporadic (page not found errors) until I specified DNS addresses.

That would be a good FAQ post. If an IP adddress changed for a dns server (granted that happens rarely - but it does happen), the engineers would not typically notify residential customers because they should be pulling this information via DHCP.
