anon : Dear OOLTech,

Hello!

Sometime in the past couple of weeks, the routing of my Optonline account has changed radically, and my service has suffered with a big increase in latency to the servers I access frequently. I am writing to ask if something can be done to improve this -- is reprovisioning the line an option with cable? Can I be routed through different nodes? Did OOL change their backbone providers? Can anything be done to help my latency?

Upload and download speeds are still excellent... no problems there... it's just the my hops have increased radically, and that's really hurt my latency (I'm an avid online gamer).

It seems as if the backbone providers Optonline uses has changed. I used to be routed through Sprint a lot, now I see a lot of BusinessInternet and BBN Planet nodes. For example, to my Half Life gaming server co-located in Stamford CT (207.138.188.248), I used to get about 12 hops and 30ms ping -- this makes sense since I live in New Canaan and that's next door to Stamford.
