PliotronX : Without even ABXing, it is easy as pie to debunk MS' claim that WMA @ 64Kbps = MP3 @ 128Kbps. At the same bitrate it's a little more difficult with a lot of samples, but some samples may reveal weaknesses in one format that the other may not exhibit. I have not tested WMA a lot, because I am leary of MS' claims altogether because they harbor a goal of market domination, and also Lame has never let me down. It's up to you to find what works best for yourself, don't believe everything you read on the intarweb ;)

That said, I hadn't kept up to date on the development of Lame, but a little bit of reading I've found quite a few folks are saying the latest alphas with --vbr-new are equal to or better in quality and with equivalent bitrate to --preset but the kicker is that it encodes at around 1/4 of the time. According to Gabriel, -V2 --vbr-new is equivalent to --preset standard and -V0 is extreme and -V4 is medium. I'll have to check this out, but I'm not going to recode my collection which is mostly in MusePack -insane though :D

howie : It can be a bottleneck if it's an older reader but most modern readers can extract Digital Audio at at least 20X, sometimes close to 50X when ripping directly to a WAV file. Ripping directly to MP3 slows down the average speed. An average speed of 20X when ripping to MP3 is considered excellent.
--
"I'm as sure as I can be... without any, you know, proof!" - Adrian Monk

Fastest MP3 Ripping Program?

cdigioia : Hi, I was wondring what the fastest MP3 ripping program is currently for a Windows XP computer? Free would be a huge plus. If it matters, I'm running a pretty clean 1.7GHZ P4 w/ 512mb ram.

Last I used rippers was several years ago with Musicmatch. Lately I've just downloaded rather that rip from CDs, but today I tried WMP 10 for some ripping. I like the interface a lot, very intuitive and clean for ripping, but I swear Musicmatch was faster back in the day?

Thanks...
