anon : Thank you Gentlemen/Ladies one and all for your feedback. I will take it as noted, the votes have come in overwhelmingly in favour of 1.45.7.

Of course, thinking there was no reply coming, I have since downloaded both versions and am presently on the 1.51.00. Always the way............

I will give it a go for now, with the very real possibility of heading back to 1.45.7 if necessary.

Like I said in the original mail, I hadn't really noticed or understood that 1.50.18 was so bad. My reason for asking now, is that I now have need to be 'certain' that any connection I make thru the router will now stay active. (See other thread I'm about to post re router swallowing calls.)

So I now need to make SURE port forwarding is working in whichever version I use.

Thank you again

Flogator : If I am allowed to reply to this thread, then I would like to quote myself from the most stable BEFSX41 firmware thread ;).

"...Firmware 1.45.7 is using the old style GUI and is the most stable of the two. However, 1.51.00 has neat little new features and is using the new style GUI. In my mind, you shall pick in between those two firmware. Both of them are considered beta material but are much better than the one provided at Linksys web site..."

As additional information, I manage few sites running the BEFSX41. The sites with BEFSX41 running 1.45.7 never had any problems. The sites running 1.51.00, I have taught the users how to reboot the router ;).

sgkent : my own experience with these is that 1.45.7 is most stable but 1.52 has slightly more features. 1.45.7 is not supported by Linksys from what I understand, but those of us who use it find it quite good. The interfaces look different between the 1.45.x series and the 1.5.x series. If my memory serves me, 1.45.7 was while Linksys owned Linksys. the 1.5x is after Cisco bought them.

With these new viruses attacking via port 445.... make sure the patches are current.

steve

[Firmware] BEFSX41 - Best f/w for my scen. - yr opinions pls?

anon : Hi folks,

Well, what a eye-opening exp. this site is.

Here I've been running on 1.50.18 for over a year or more now and wondering why my pc's occasionally lose their net connects. I thought the NIC's were failing, not to mention wondering why I could never get the VPN to work. And now I find out 1.50.18 is probably the worst of the lot.

So.... Having read lots of threads and noted the local Support Angel, Flogator's position on either 1.45.7 or 1.51.00, I need to ask your opinions pls.

I landed here because I suspect the router of not letting my SAMBA-Client call connect to an MS share which sits behind the FX41.

In my scen., the FX41 sits as my internal gateway to my DMZ. I use the FX41 as an internal NAT firewall, DHCP and (if I could ever get it working, I'd like to use) VPN. Other than that, I don't really use it for much else. (I've never understood SNMP or RIP)

I now also want to be sure that any pass-through I set up will also work as I need to connect to and use the MS Share as part of my external linux filesystem.

The MS Box is a Win Srvr 2003 so I don't need NetBIOS ports (or so I understand), just SMB over TCP on 445.

Long story, short question;

You guys seem to know this router inside out. Which of the 2 f/w's quoted as stable function best in this scenario please?

And I will dutifully up/downgrade immed.

Thanks

KDoc
