Re: Vote: Gnome or KDE

Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to say KDE is the best and Gnome is crap. I have the latest Gnome and the latest KDE and use them both. I used Gnome with Slack 7.1 and I really liked it as opposed to KDE which I thought was not quite up to scratch.
I'm just thinking that KDE has progressed so much further in a short amount of time compared to Gnome. Atleast we have choice I guess.

Frankly, I find KDE to be a hog...
It uses a lot more resources than it has to, and that makes it seem a lot more like windows, which I am desparately trying to escape after years of unwanted exposure.

Now gnome has its problems as well.. probably too numerous to mention, but I think it is better with resources (at least for my purposes) and it definitely does not crash as often as KDE.

For comparison purposes (maybe it's just my machine.. dunno):

I've used KDE about 20 times.. I gave it a try.. really.. it crashed twice on me..

I've used Gnome for about a year, it crashed once.

Now.. I've used afterstep for about 4 years and it hasn't crashed once.. but that's a whole other discussion.

Overall.. it's what you like best for your purposes, I find mine are best suited by gnome.

god bless, neither of these beasts. afterstep, windowmaker, blackbox, icewm, and some others (9wm, ratpoison) are far better.

I picked KDE to start with (well, I started with fvwm95, actually, several years ago) because it was a bit farther along than Gnome at the time.

I've stayed with KDE because I'm not smart enough to figure out and retain knowledge of multiple GUI's/desktops. By the same reasoning, I've stuck with RedHat. Once I've got it figured out (pretty much now), I'm turning my efforts to learning the apps.

So many cool apps, so few brain cells...

kde hands down. Although on my Sun Workstation I am using Gnome over CDE and that may cause me to change my linux boxes just for consistency.

But why the virtual console when it's much nicer using a term emulator instead?
