laserfan : Robb as you have followed this thread, I wanted to add that AFTER I got an RMA to send-back my brand-new DI-524 (buy.com) for its random resets, it occurred to me that: maybe the 524, wired & used as an access point only (no WAN connection) should never have been asked to issue "Static DHCP" at all to my wireless client? My main WAN gateway/router is a Linksys, and altho I have DHCP disabled on the Linky, maybe I should never have asked the 524 to issue IPs? Then again even w/all Log options selected, there was nothing in the log to suggest any problem.

OK so I disabled DHCP completely on the 524, then set the Linky to DHCP an IP to my wireless client (via the 524 I mean of course) and while it worked fine I didn't leave it "up" in this configuration long enough to see if I got any further resets. I'd already bought a new AP today and was anxious to set it up in the 524's place.

This is my final nagging thought about this--I hate to give-up on a product, but I'll be sending the 524 back anyway without doing any more testing. :p

anon : I am yet another lucky fool :( who got his hands on this yo yo wireless POS AP. I started with the shipped 1.05 had problems, upgraded the firmware to the online 1.05 and had problems, returned it to the store and got a new one and had problems, read online then rolled back to the 1.03 and lost Xbox live but it seemed more stable, emailed dlink techsupport and they had me jump throught he flaming hoops with no luck. I just noticed the 1.11 update for my 3 month old A1 hardware and will be trying it next. This AP has caused me much grief around my house as the internet always worked before with my Dlink 614+ until I brought this home and replaced the working Dlink B unit. I'll go ahead and paste the release notes from the 1.11 update as it is fun reading. Even more fun than not surfing the internet on the DLINK DI-524, I love it when I paid good money for a DI-524 and then my internet transaction gets lost cuz it drops my connection!

Tonight I saw a DI-624 for $16 after rebate at Fry's and I seriously considered buying it to replace my bogus DI-524.
Re: DI-524 bios 1.05 disconnects

anon : If you are experiencing disconnects on your "Wired" or "Wireless" connections, check windows "event viewer" to confirm if it is occuring every 34 minutes. You can get to event viewer via "Start | Programs | Administrative Tools | Event viewer".

If it is the 34 minute reset problem, you should be able to resolve it using any one of these 3 options:

1) Disable the wireless capability of the DLink router.
2) Downgrade to 1.03 firmware.
3) On your "Wired" nic, set the media type to "100mbps, full duplex". This is probably the best option of the 3 for most people since it has no negative impact.

From the testing I have done, here is what I believe to be the problem and reason.

I believe the problem is tied to a bug in the speed negotiation program logic of the 1.05 firmware. Even more specifically, I believe the bug is located in the unique portion of code that is used for handling the speed negotiations for the LAN side. The bug would have been introduced when they implemented the "Wan Select to 10/100 Mbps (ie. speed negotiation)" option in the 1.05 firmware.

Although the feature they were adding was dealing specifically with the WAN side of the router, it can be expected that both the WAN and LAN sides of the router share at least some portion of the Speed Negotation program logic. Hence, any changes they make to the speed negotiation logic on either side could have an impact on either side, such as in this case. Although some of the logic is shared, some of it would need be unique to each side to address the communication differences (ie. speed, media type, encryption, etc)

Here is what I believe to be happening:

When a device connects to the switched router, they negotiate and agree on the speed they will use to communicate. This negotiation process goes back and forth until the optimum speed is decided. Generally, the highest speed that they are both capable of performing becomes the agreed upon speed.

The router and broadband modem perform this negotiation successfully and connect. (Remember, the bug is located in the speed negotiation program logic unique to the LAN side.)

We hit the bug on the LAN side when the router runs it speed negotiation code for the LAN side (and wireless feature is enabled). The router & nics (wired or wireless) successfully negotiate the desired speed and a connection becomes established. But unfortunately, the buggy program logic traps the router into an endless circle of repeating negotiations. Ultimately, this leads to the router resetting itself after exactly 34 minutes (+/- 5 seconds). I suspect it is either an error trap or buffer overflow that forces the reset.

When this reset occurs, the router reboots, all connections are lost, and your wired/wireless PC experiences the disconnect. After 20 seconds, the router is back up and your devices attempt to reconnect....only to start the vicious cycle over again.

So, to resolve our problem, you need to prevent the router from running the LAN side's speed negotiation logic. We can do this by:

1) Disable the wireless side of the router. If wireless is not enabled, then the router will never try to negotiate a connection for the wireless LAN, therefore, it would never hit the bug that is believed to exist in the Speed Negotiation logic (ie. in the portion that is unique to handling speed negotiation for the LAN side).

2) Revert back to 1.03 firmware. The 1.03 firmware's speed negotiation logic was fine. It wasn't until they decided to add the user selectable "WAN Select to 10/100 Mbps" option (ie. which deals with speed negotiation) in firmware 1.05 that the bug was introduced. Unfortunately, going back to 1.03 will have you losing out on a few nice features/fixes that came with 1.05.

3) Force your wired nic to use a specific speed (ie. 100mbps full duplex). By forcing your nic to a specific speed, it becomes pointless for the router to negotiate speed. In effect, the NIC is offering the router a "Take-it or leave-it" proposition.....all it needs to do is accept (or decline) as their is nothing to negotiate.

4) Possible 4th Option: Upgrade to firmware 1.11 that the USA released for DLink 524 RevA1/2. However, please note their disclaimer that installing this on a canadian product will void warranty. I suspect it would not harm the router but haven't tried it yet. If you have, please share your experience as to if it damaged your router and/or if it fixed the 34 min disconnect issue.

Anyway, I hope this helps a few people out there.

Cheers

Bill

anon : Hi everyone,

I've been reading the problems you've all been having with the intermittant wired disconnects and firmware 1.05...I've had them as well, but I've noticed something that I haven't seen anyone else mention in this thread.

Everytime there is a reset of the router, the disconnects appear. But what I've noticed, is that the router seems to fix itself after a period of about 3-4 days.

The very first time I plugged the router in, the disconnects began. Within 3-4 days they disappeared for about 2 months.

Then, when I went into my router one day to shore up my security settings, the same disconnects began occurring again after the router reset to take on the new configuration.

Once again, after 3-4 days, the router works without any random disconnects. Strange.

It seems further tweaking of the router continues a vicious cycle of disconnects. The more you try to fix the problem, the longer the disconnects occur.

I don't know if this is useful information, but perhaps, by not continually trying to fix the connection by adjusting various settings, and taking a wait and see approach for approx. 3-4 days, you too may see an end to the random disconnects.

Hope this helps...

Nataq3 : Ive been reading all that stuff lately because I wanted to get that router (came with wireless usb adapter and good rebate) I said to myself that if it goes wrong ill return it and bought a longer warranty so I can always exchange it.

Installation was a breeze and wireless working at full signal from across the house. Been like this for an hour... I know, some of you just begin having problems after few months. Something I found interresting and dont remember seeing that in this thread is that there is 2 different hardware version of that modem. Version A and version C. Not talking about firmware here. You can see by yourself here: »support.dlink.ca/ProductView.asp?ProdID=356 . Click on version C... So for version C, the one I have, firmware version are 3.01 and 3.02 (this one released on february 2005) instead of 1.03 and 1.05 (in 2004). So I guess all problems you guys are talking are for hardware version A not C. So just my two cents here... maybe you guys could try firmware for version C if nothing else is working for you... or maybe not! We cant know if we dont try.

Luckily I wont get into these problems since I got version C with firmware 3.02 out of the box. Good luck!

They said I should be looking at the lights during reboots to see what the lights are doing. I said I had 2 524's, one bought as a replacement for the first one's reboot prob, doing same exact thing. I asked what the reason would be for looking at the lights on the front during reboots, and the tier 2 tech said that would be to determine if the router is defective. (So then what, plug in the other one & watch its lights during reboot?) He couldn't grasp that idea I guess. And my comments to him about the internet offering further evidence (in forums like this) of 524 problems went into the bitbucket because he indicated that there's a forum for anything. Many more useless exchanges took place in my first & second calls.

End result -- tech told me that I had the option of taking the 524's back & buy a 624. (To me, this says Dlink support might just not care about, and definitely doesn't have a solid solution for, the 524 reboot problems.)

My former respect for Dlink as a good Wi-Fi equipment vanished today in a few hours.

Real trippy solution tho -- I replaced with an AT&T wifi router.
anon : I had more problems with the 1.03 bios than I have had with the 1.05. Not that I am problem free, just less problems. Some things to consider when trying to figure out why this is a piece of junk. D-link obviously recycles software from one router to the next. Evidence is shown on the LOG page "View Log displays the activities occurring on the DI-514+. Click on Log Settings for advance features.
" They forgot to change it to say DI-524. I also found that Win XP's Wireless zero configuration utility was causing compatibility problems. I found a fix for this buried deep in microsoft’s archives. It is not part of their update site and I forgot what I found it under. As for people that have found some relief by discarding pings, that will be found on a hardware to hardware basis as WAN’s dynamic link layer protocols are not as established and standard as ethernet protocols. They vary slightly from manufacture to manufacture and can cause some incompatibility.

I was trying lots of configs, connecting wan, desconnecting LAN, WIFI or whatever, but the disconnections within 30 seconds were increased in very high percentage.
Carnivore : I can't believe the answer to my problems all this time was flashing to an old version of firmware on my DI-524.

Over the past several months, I have spent HOURS trying to troubleshoot why my wireless connection keeps dropping, and why my DCHP keeps renewing every few seconds. I RMA'd the router. I RMA'd my wireless cards. And then after those efforts didn't work, I RMA'd my entire new Dell laptop to try to sort this out.

Finally I came to this forum and learned what everybody else here seems to already know, that the 1.05 firmware is thoroughly broken and flashing back to 1.03 is the solution.

In all the many times I called D-Link tech support, NOT ONCE did they suggest rolling back to v.1.03 firmware. Why is it that everybody here knows to do this but the company doesn't let on?? It never occurred to me that a final release of a firmware version that had been officially posted since last summer could be the cause of all my frustration. It was only when I finally started shopping for a new router on Amazon that I spotted customer review for the DI-524 pointing me to this forum for the answer.

Tonight, after reverting to firmware 1.03, I am disgusted to find that the DHCP no longer resets every few seconds, and my wireless connection is rock solid, the way it should have been all along. (And for the record, I tried doing a crash reset and re-loading v.1.05 as suggested in another thread, but it didn't make any difference).

One thing is for sure, I will never, ever, *ever* buy another D-Link product again. The company deserves to be hit with a class action lawsuit forcing them to send new, properly-working hardware to all the consumers they have ripped off with their broken product all this time. I only wish I could bill them for all the time I sunk into trying to solve this, no thanks to their so-called tech support department that obviously chose not to admit the real problem.

KeithinVan : Ive noticed a slightly different problem with my di-524 relating to disconnects. 3 Days ago I upgraded cable modems from a Terayon to a Motorola Surfboard (docsis). I must say I’m sorry to see the Terayon go. Its been flawless for more than 3 years.

I’m actually writing this as I re-flash (downgrade) to 1.03 from 1.05. Its 2am. As I read through the previous msgs I noticed one distinct difference. I have been successfully running 1.05 for about 3 months. No disconnects! On either wan or lan side. Now, after doing my cable modem upgrade I started experiencing repeated disconnects, wan side only. Occurrence time is at least once every 2 hours. Nothing had changed on my internal lan, hardware-wise, cabling, or computers using the lan. Even plugged into the same port on the power bar! The only factor that changed was the cable modem and suddenly I started having the annoying disconnect issue. Very strange. Discussing the matter with a knowledgeable and professional employee at Shaw (actually used linux and unix at home like me), he was very interested in the disconnects and together we speculated various circumstances which could be triggering this on their side. I was pushing my idea it was cable modem related, because it was definitely NOT happening prior to the swap. He felt it was a relatively unknown problem, yet agreed potentially a big one. At least big for annoyance factor.

--- Its been 8 hours since my 1.03 downgrade, and not a single disconnect. I suspect my problem has been solved. I cant say why it only happened once the docsis was connected on v1.05, but something was triggering the reset.

Another unrelated problem I found with di-524 and WEP enabled on 1.03 was with a wireless XP notebook. Frequently I could connect to the AP/router yet not obtain a ip. The router seemed incapable of sending back the ip. I watched the traffic off the notebook, lots of dhcp requests, yet no replies. Again, this was after a successful WEP connection. WEP off, there was no problems obtaining a ip. Another dlink bug?

Hope this info helps. Im regretting buying Dlink now.

Thanks all,

Keith
New West
