 | correct me if i'm wrong Someone correct me if I am wrong, cause its this way where I live. I live in a rural area w/o broadband so this isnt an issue with me, but here's my take.
If my phone line(POTS) is disconnected for whatever reason, I can still dial 911 and get through w/o any problems. I assume most people that have VoIP service had a POTS line at one time, and can just hook up a handset to use for 911 services. |

 | With some telephone comp if your line is disconnected you do not have 911. I have vonage and a cell phone that may or not work in my area. No qwest 911 service. |

The areas I've lived/live in from PA to FL and in between when the line is terminated or disconnected for any reason, its DEAD. Nothing, ZIP, NADDA.
Other areas you may be able to dial 911 or to reach a service center to get new service. --

UglyDorkPremium join:2002-01-09 Buffalo, NY | reply to JamesHutto I have Vonage, and in my area of the world (Western New York) it's the same way.
However, some people (myself included) physically disconnect the main POTS line coming into the house, so that my Vonage line can be used on any phone jack in the house. From what I understand, leaving the man POTS line connected while using Vonage will damage the Vonage adapter.
However, I have tested my 911 service by calling the local police dept first, and it worked fine. I also have two cell phones. --

 | reply to JamesHutto In my town, not only can a disconnected POTS line call 911, it can receive phone calls and call toll free numbers. About 7 years ago when I had just moved into an apartment, there was a delay in getting my phone switched over, so I used my calling card to call someone with caller ID, and had them give me my phones number. I was able to receive incoming calls for the few days it took to get my phone switched over. -- "With other distros when you have problems they are problems with Redhat or with SuSE or with Lindows.
