Speedstream 6520, how to set up for WiFi?

Just a quick question...

I have a friend who has a Sympatico account and a Siemens SpeedStream 6520 combination modem/wireless router. It's working fine with her notebook plugged directly in, but she wants to set it up to "talk" to the WiFi card installed in her notebook.

Not having ever seen the 6520, is there anything I should know about activating the wireless router part to start broadcasting? And beyond that, what are the typical steps for setting things up in software? (If there's a FAQ here on that specifically, I'd be happy to have a look).

She actually has a Macintosh notebook, so I'll probably be posting in in the Mac group shortly, but I can't imagine setting it up being all that different.

should only have to log into 192.168.2.1 and go to the homenetwork section and into advanced and follow the steps

on my 6300 its »192.168.2.1/WRLSwizardj. ··· ode=HOME

Do I need to change the IP and subnet under network settings first?

Incidentally, how will I know the 6520's WiFi is active, is there a LED on the modem to indicate it? (I'm just wondering if by default it'll be on or off; I'm guessing that's all setup by going into the 192.168.2.1 address anyway).

I had her enter 192.168.2.1 in her web browser though it came up saying 'page not found'. Are you sure I don't need to go into network settings and change her IP temporarily to something like, say, 10.0.0.1 / 255.255.255.0?

As for setup, is it as simple as just going into the SpeedStream's built-in menus to turn on wireless mode? (again, I've never seen or used a 6520 before)

"If your PC has not been connected to a broadband modem or other network device, you will need to
perform the PC configuration procedure below. Remember to restart each PC when finished. If your
PC has been connected to a broadband modem or other network device, continue to the “Using the
Wireless Connection” section below.
1. Start your Web browser. In the Address box, enter the following: »speedstream.
2. Press Enter. The SpeedStream Simple Setup Wizard will launch.
3. When prompted, enter the Internet connection information provided by your
Internet Service Provider.
4. At the end of the Setup Wizard, you will be given the option to either connect to
the Internet or further configure the optional settings of the gateway.
5. If additional configuration is desired, select the icon for the service or option
you wish to configure: the gateway’s firewall and security settings, User
Profiles and content filtering, or home network options."

"Using the Wireless Connection
By default, the SpeedStream® Gateway is configured to work
seamlessly with other SpeedStream® wireless products. The default
wireless interface settings are:
SSID: SpeedStream
Channel: 11
Mismatched wireless settings will prevent successful
wireless network connections between devices, so
you may need to reconfigure some wireless settings
to ensure that all settings match between wireless
devices if you are:
a) Using another manufacturer’s wireless products
b) Adding the SpeedStream® Gateway to an existing
wireless network
The Setup Wizard will walk you through setting up wireless settings."

Thanks! The modem manual is extremely helpful.

She still cannot get into the built-in web interface by typing "http://speedstream" but I'm guessing she needs to set her TCP/IP to obtain the DHCP automatically or set it to 192.168.x.x (whatever the modem's IP address would be).

Good news, I got her Macintosh notebook working wirelessly! I thought I'd mention what was required in case anyone else with a 6520 is looking for setup tips in future and digs up this thread:

- Under TCP/IP settings, set to automatically obtain IP from DHCP
- Entered '192.168.2.1' in web browser
- Went through all the setup steps, including enable wireless mode
- Cycled power on modem (this final step was important for all the settings to take effect)

Entering "http://SpeedStream" doesn't work, as the manual mentions. Also the setup Wizard isn't the default one from Siemens, it looks like some custom firmware from Sympatico (but basically the same steps; it also forces you to enable security).
