What is wrong with Firestone? It is not Firestone's fault that Ford under-inflated tires to make their POS vehicles pass rollover test.

quote:
THE FACTS

The base tire of the Ford’s trucks is 235/75R-15. Firestone recommended to inflate it to 30 psi.

Ford’s internal memo suggests that Explorer didn’t pass rollover tests with 15” tires inflated to Firestone’s recommended pressure of 30 psi. To increase stability, Ford recommended the lower inflation pressure of 26 psi.

Firestone says that their tires run hot (take note) if they are inflated to below 30 psi. Underinflation increases tire wall flexing, rolling resistance and, in addition to that, increases fuel consumption and makes the vehicle less responsive.

Preliminary reports indicate that tread separations were caused by the excessive temperatures. The recall first started in states with warmer temperatures.

Only produced at Decatur, IL factory Wilderness AT tires are recalled. ATX tires recalled regardless of place of manufacture.

CONCLUSIONS

Let’s see… Explorer is susceptible to rolling over with 15” tires inflated to 30 psi. Ford recommends 26 psi. Underinflation causes high temperatures. High temperatures cause tread to separate.

WHO’S FAULT?

Both Firestone and Ford are at fault. Ford knew that their trucks are to easily roll over if normal (30 psi) tire inflation pressures were to be used. Instead of redesigning suspensions, Ford decided to lower recommended inflation pressure.

Firestone produced tires that cannot withstand driving with low inflation pressure. They should have predicted this kind of usage. Didn’t they know that Ford recommends 26 psi?

WHAT TO DO IN FUTURE?

If your truck is affected, get replacement tires and inflate them to… Let’s see.

Ford said that they recommended 26 psi for 10 years. Not very convincing. Now they say 26 to 20 psi will be acceptable.

Never thought I'd be asking for a price on tires here!

Looking for 4 Dueler A/T Revos 265/70-16 shipped to 06259. Best price I have so far $625 + tax (local), which includes mounting and balancing. Worst price so far was $750.

Thanks.

Damn, where were you 6 months ago when I spent $1,000+ on my Potenza S03s!

Just out of curiosity, can you quote me the S03 in 235/40-18?

Thanks.
