| Campus wont let us have routers My campus has resnet and Cisco Clean Access Agent in order to login to the connection if you are on windows. They dont let us run routers because they say is screws the network up (lies?) so how can i split my connection, without them getting on me about routers. I want to get one of those next generation consoles like xbox360 and nintendo revolution and want ability to do some gaming. |

In my building some idiot hooked up a router incorrectly and it acted a dhcp server to anyone on the same switch. Basically this meant everyone on our floor couldn't access the internet for a good 3 hours. Fortunatly they weren't smart enough to actually password protect the device so while it took 3 hours for campus IT to shut off the jack it only took me 3 minutes to get the MAC and IP for router to the right people.
Anyways... I should probably get on subject.. so then any switch/hub will work but you probably want to buy at least a 10/100 switch which if you get it off newegg.com is currently only $25 minus a $10 rebate makes it $15 plus shipping.

I dont know because ive never had an internet enabled console before (my last was a nintendo 64 back in 99 yes laugh at me now)but plan to get one of the next gens |

Switches won't actually work in most places, it sounds like they make you log your MAC to your student username or room number or some such device to prevent you from using more than one box.
You CAN in fact utilize a router on the network. It is technically possible, though if it's against your AUP you're on your own. MAKE DEAD CERTAIN that you disable the local DHCP server on the router. Then, connect it to your dorm network and log in normally, it should see the MAC of the router, register it as a single computer, and you're good.
I also had a situation when I lived in the dorms with an idiot with a Linksys router who didn't disable the DHCP server. Didn't knock anyone off the network, but the broadcast traffic pushed half the hall over their 5GB quota. So your resnet guys aren't lying to you. The average person with a router will screw up their network. |

Another easy alternative is to change the MAC address of the consoles to MAC address of your computer. This way, you just plug the ethernet into whatever device you want to use.
Alternatively, you could buy a cheap switch, then hook up your PC with one MAC and give both the consoles the same MAC and then just hook whichever one you plan on using online. This is assuming that they let you register two MACs. |

Why would they not let you have a router????? At purdue routers are recommended for multiple computers as each person only gets 1 dynamic ip address per student username. If you use xbox live or anything like that you will need a router at purdue.
When I was in the dorms we found someone hooked up their router wrong, and it was giving us 192 ips. I just logged into to it with the default password and did a bad firmware flash to brick it and prevent it from giving out ips again. |

| A lot of times these registration things require a web browser. I know UCR's resnet specifically says that they don't support PS/2's, even if you don't have a computer, because they can't log on to the web registration interface. (And because they're too lazy to actually manually register the cards.)
Having a router gets around this problem, as you only need one computer behind the router with a web browser to register the MAC. |

That was a nice thing to do, destroy someones router, even though they are allowed on the network. Can I destroy your computer now because it's causing tcp/ip traffic?

Yes, you can change the MAC address of the Xbox through the network configuration tool and you can change the MAC of the PS2 with the network setup disc. |

could you not do Internet Connection Sharing through windows? Just buy a cheap NIC and your in buisness. I don't know how well this would work but it might.

At my school with Cisco Clean Access, you need to register your game console's MAC address so that you can play online. So just get your router's MAC address and register it with your network admins. Tell 'em that it's your Xbox's MAC address. That'll bypass the Clean Access Agent. |
