That is simply wonderful, free access to the GSM network without a SIM?
GSM does not always require a sim. The phone still has identifiable info in the handshake and in most of the packets sent to and from it. -- "It's always funny until someone gets hurt......and then it's absolutely friggin' hysterical!"
