NYC Metro | Who GIVES a shit! Considering that there is hardly ANY "refugees" left, I don't see how this will really help. Maybe it can help the troops on the ground, but besides that.... They are just looking for publicity.
Cell phones are for teeny boppers. Real communication is done via radio during disasters.

What I'm saying is that people praise T-Mobile like they are Gods! They have billions of dollars to throw around, this isn't a big thing. It is EXPECTED. If we live in a world where people and CORPORATIONS (making millions every month from 99% of the unaffected areas) are given recognition for offering FREE services to a small area, then our world is screwed up.
Back in the old days this was common practice, today.... Well... Today, it is "rare special treatment."

Real communication is done via radio during disasters.-Tzale Yes, it is expected that T-Mobile would have restored service to their towers, however, T-Mobile didnt have to open their wireless hotspots in that area for 1 week to allow people to be able to contact loved ones via email/aim/whatever. That was voluntary. Secondly, they didnt have to get service back up as quickly as they did. T-Mobile could have stated that service around the area would be restored as the situation was sized up. This isnt the "old days," and it hasnt been the "old days" for quite some years now.
Given the low ethical standards that many corporations operate under today, I think that T-Mobile does deserve praise. Now, can T-Mobile do more? Certainly. They can deploy mobile kiosks that will allow people to send email to loved ones who havent heard from them, but for that matter, Cingular and Verizon should do the same.
It is unfortunate that T-Mobile doesnt have the coverage I need, else I would most likely switch to them after my contract is up with Cingular....but then again being that they are getting phones that now support the 850 band, I just might be able switch and not lose needed coverage.
My local Pizza Hut has a sign up stating that they are donating $1 of every Pizza sale until they reach $10,000 to donate to the victims of Katrina. The sign also urges other resturants to do the same. Is there an intended marketing effect? Yep, make people buy more pizza from them. But nontheless is it a good effort? Yes. | |

Looks a little funny running around with a HF radio on your back and about 100lbs of batteries. Long haul, HF is the way to go. CW is better but it's dead. VHF is line of site and is no better then GMRS/FRS @ 2 watts. Maybe 2 miles at best, on top of a tall building. UHF radios? Don't even go there. Best stick with cell's since the MAJORITY of people have them. Once the cell phone companies get the "golden" sites back up, everyone will be back to talking.. | |
